Amelie

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 12 years

Breed: mixed breed Gender: female - neutered Born: October 10, 2014 Color: brown Size: approx. 50 cm Weight: approx. 20 kg In the animal shelter since: November 27, 2023 Update August 2024 Currently, Amelie is sometimes in foster care with a animal caregiver. There, one can see how she behaves in everyday life. In the past, Amelie has not shown any boundaries, which has solidified her behavior. This is shown through territorial behavior both in the home and with strangers, who she keeps at a distance. For this reason, Amelie is secured with a muzzle. Once she has established a relationship with her person, she can be easily confined. With guidance, Amelie can also live with cats, but this must be managed long-term. Since the tough knotter witch cannot stay permanently in this foster home, we are looking for a forever home for her. The current foster home would also be willing to learn the new people and stand by them. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Our senior is a self-assured and independent female dog. She is very cuddly with her primary caregiver but becomes possessive and keeps other people and animals at a distance. Therefore, it is important to assert oneself from the beginning and take responsibility for her. She walks well on a leash, and some basic commands are known to her. Amelie has learned to be alone for a certain period, and driving is also no problem for her. At the vet, she should be secured with a muzzle, as she does not back down from using her teeth due to her insecurity. Due to her pronounced prey drive, no small animals should live in her new home. She gets along well with fellow animals, but this is not necessary. For Amelie, we are looking for dog-experienced people who can assert themselves and are not afraid of discussions.

About Amelie

What life with Amelie looks like

Amelie is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Hanau in Hanau.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amelie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amelie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Hanau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amelie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amelie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Hanau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amelie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amelie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Hanau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amelie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
