Apollo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Breed: Cane Corso-Mix Gender: male - neutered Born: 29.11.2019 Color: gray Weight: ca. 30 kg Size: ca. 55 cm In the animal shelter since: 02.05.2023 - currently on a foster home Apollo searching for the needle in the haystack! The 5-year-old, neutered Cane Corso-Mix belongs to the more difficult candidates to place, as he doesn't necessarily bring the qualities of a cuddly companion. Closeness and affection only happen on his terms, and then, if desired, are very warmly given. If forced, it ends at best with a light threat and a short sniff – in the worst case with a well-deserved tap on the head. Just on his spot, he is reluctant to be disturbed while he luxuriously tends to his beauty sleep. With a house leash, however, it is no problem to lead him out of his quarters. Then he will obediently put on the muzzle, which he also wears politely. Walks are fine as long as they are not too extensive – he will quickly show when it's time to turn around again :-)) Other dogs are not necessarily needed. He has learned to accept them and lives here in a mixed group without much fuss, but he does not value close contact. Strangers are generally mistrusted and it takes his time to get used to them. Genetically speaking, that also makes sense. Here, a section that is off-limits to visitors would already be advantageous. In the last 8 months, he has grown a little beyond himself and has mastered many things that seemed impossible before. Overall, it takes very little to make him happy, but a lot. Food – and especially at the top of his list – a warm spot without too many expectations, 1-2 short rounds a day, a garden to just be dumb in the neighborhood barking, and above all a lot of understanding for his sometimes rather limited nature. Maybe someone still has a small corner for the self-proclaimed retiree free and saves him the move back to the animal shelter.

About Apollo

What life with Apollo looks like

Apollo is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Hanau in Hanau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Apollo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Apollo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Hanau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Apollo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Apollo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Hanau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Apollo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Apollo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Hanau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Apollo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
