Apolo

Podenco · Male · Adult · 4 years

Apolo is cheerful, eager to learn and a great lover of people. Apolo is looking for his forever home. He is a wonderful example of how important it is to give a dog from the animal shelter time to settle in and how much can develop when it is fairly supported. Since late February 2026, he has been living in Germany and has made an impressive development during this time. At the beginning, many things were still difficult for him. Being alone, calming down, developing security in daily life, and sharing or giving up resources - all these are topics that many dogs have to learn when they arrive in a new life. Apolo mastered these steps at his own pace and now shows how much is inside him. He now lives harmoniously with other dogs, and real friendships have developed from initial uncertainty. He can also be left alone with his dog friends and exchanging items works very well already. Eating together and sharing treats with other dogs is no longer a problem for him. Particularly remarkable is his close bond with his humans - he seeks their company, enjoys every attention and loves long cuddles. Outside, Apolo is a wonderful companion. He walks relaxed on the leash, loves search games, runs and digs happily and plays joyfully with other dogs. Apolo can be taken anywhere, he is happy to be there and has no problems with any environmental stimuli. He likes to learn new things, shows great joy in small tricks, is well responsive and regularly participates in group classes at the dog school, where he actively and motivatedly contributes. Apolo is an incredible great dog who is now ready for his final home with people who love him, continue to accompany him and give him the security he deserves. Here goes Apolo's video

About Apolo

What life with Apolo looks like

Apolo is a large adult podenco dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Apolo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Apolo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Apolo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Apolo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Apolo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Apolo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Apolo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
