Charly

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 11 years

The retriever-mix Charly was born around 2015 and came to our shelter on January 22, 2026, from a seizure in the district of Gütersloh. In a house there, 30 dogs were secured, living under terrible conditions. The seven retriever-mixes we took in were housed in one room and were practically up to their bellies in feces. Their fur was accordingly matted. Not only did several baths become necessary, but in some cases, they also had to be shaved and trimmed so that their skin could breathe. They were emaciated, had mostly inflamed ear canals, and a lot of tartar. Even now, a lot is still coming our way. Charly, the oldest of the seven, is simply loving and, naturally, much calmer and more balanced than his buddies due to his age. He has a head tilt, which likely stems from an original ear infection that has since healed. Charly still goes for very long walks and loves being with his people. He shows himself to be compatible with other dogs. All the dogs from the seizure require dental work or even more, so we would be very grateful for sponsors who can help us with the expected high veterinary costs.

About Charly

What life with Charly looks like

Charly is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Paderborn in Paderborn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Paderborn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Paderborn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Paderborn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
