Dickens

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 3 years

Name: Dickens Breed: Mixed breed Gender: male Size: about 48 cm Age: 28.09.2022 Weight: about 18 kg Child-friendly: Yes compatible with other dogs: Yes compatible with cats: needs to be tested Neutered: Yes Information from the veterinarian: microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, EU passport Mediterranean test: negative Remarks: APAP.PLASENCIA Current location: Spain Protection fee: 600 euros including transport last update: February 2026 This is a wonderful name for a dog who still needs to properly write his own "life story." Since Dickens grew up in the shelter, he is like a "rough diamond": He has a spotless character, but the world outside the bars is still a big adventure book with many unread pages. Dickens is a very special dog who hasn't lost his courage despite a difficult start. He was rescued along with his mother and has grown up in the shelter ever since. This means: Dickens is a model in terms of social behavior. He gets along with everyone, is absolutely confident with other dogs, and loves human companionship above all. Be honest: Dickens is an "outdoor beginner." While he is confident in the shelter, he doesn't know life in an apartment yet. Vacuum cleaners? I don't know them, but I will learn! Cars and traffic noise? Still a bit scary, but I can do it with your hand on my side. Housebroken? I'll definitely understand quickly if you show me how. Dickens is an extraordinary dog by nature. He is not a daredevil, but a loyal friend who just wants to please. Due to his social and uncomplicated nature, he is also ideal for first-time dog owners who are willing to study together with him. What Dickens is looking for: people with a little patience for his first steps in the "real" world. A home where there is already a first dog (not necessary, but he loves company!). Lots of affection and a warm basket. He has waited his whole life - may he now arrive somewhere? He is eagerly waiting to finally prove what a great companion is in him.

About Dickens

What life with Dickens looks like

Dickens is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Step by Paw e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dickens, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dickens?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Step by Paw e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dickens on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dickens if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Step by Paw e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dickens already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dickens isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Step by Paw e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dickens and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
