Johnny

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 4 months

If you live in a small mountain village in Andalusia, know all the people and dogs who live within the area, and then in the morning you open the door to your house and find two small herding dogs, you are certainly initially extremely surprised. This is what happened at least to an animal-loving man who recently discovered Johnny and his sister on his doorstep. There they were, frozen, hungry, and helpless, two puppies only three months old—good advice is valuable here. Naturally, the two travelers first came into the warm room, enjoyed a good breakfast, and warmed up by the stove. Meanwhile, their rescuer called all the neighbors and tried to find out if anyone was missing their new friends. But no one knew about puppies in the area, so the kind gentleman informed a small organization he knew that sometimes privately helps rescue dogs. Since the superhero of our young athletes (and his surely equally great family) is willing to give the little girl a permanent home and keep Johnny until he also finds a final home, the volunteers referred them to ArcoNatura because the reach of a placement offer is simply much greater there. So here I am, having the pleasure of introducing you to Johnny. After just a few days in his foster family, the small man, who surely wants to become impressively big and strong, has recovered well from the hardships of his journey. He and his little sister are constantly causing trouble in the area and exploring the world with great curiosity. However, the two are also typical HSHs, and the most important activities at this cute age are eating and sleeping, which is clear when you still want to grow so much. Johnny is a kind and very affectionate ball of fur who loves to cuddle and always wants to be in the middle rather than just on the side. He's still too big for now, as he can be a tripping hazard while cleaning and cooking, but in a few weeks he will be too big to simply run between the legs or be overlooked (unless he's lying motionless in the snow—he's truly fantastic at hiding). Our cuddle monster is looking for a loving family willing to dedicate themselves to his training (which isn't always easy with our funny HSH minds), showing him lots of patience, even more humor, and infinite love. But let me tell you: nothing is more beautiful than having one of our gentle giants by your side (and I'm speaking from experience, since one of these types is currently blowing quite warm air into my left ear), and this experience and deep friendship are worth facing the fact that you cannot train a herding dog, but you can only create the perfect team, and although you will never become a hero on the dog field, you will be able to call the most impressive and loyal soul in the world your friend. Johnny wants to grow up to be such a soul balm. Are you the person who can help him and in return receive the greatest gift a dog can give a human being—that is a heart made of pure gold, given only once, and one you must never break?

DE·Show original

About Johnny

What life with Johnny looks like

Johnny is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Johnny, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Johnny?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Johnny on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Johnny if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Johnny already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Johnny isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Johnny and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
