Nathan

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Nathan probably knows only outdoor behavior. We would ideally like to find a home for this herding-shelter-dog where he can watch the house and yard, but also have family connections so that he can finally have the opportunity to make contact with his trusted people when he wants to. As Nathan has now shown a very people-oriented behavior with us, we can even imagine placing him in an apartment that is suitable for living on ground level, provided he gets enough exercise. The imposing male dog is very friendly and gentle with people at our animal shelter and loves his cuddle sessions. He also behaves very confidently and friendly towards other dogs. Nathan shows good leash manners and orientation towards people. The common basic commands are still not fully known to the Kangal mix. While it can certainly be worked on, the cooperative nature of a herding-shelter-dog is naturally somewhat limited. We are therefore looking for people who ideally already have experience with the husbandry of herding-shelter-dogs and simply want a dog to live with them without having high expectations regarding obedience or any dog-sport suitability. Nathan is not suitable for that. We do not know his compatibility with cats or small animals. We also do not know if Nathan has had any contact with children. The property must be securely fenced for such a large dog, and one should expect that a herding-shelter-dog will bark at strangers or other dogs when seen. Please realistically assess whether this is tolerated in your neighborhood. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. Describe in the email how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then a staff member will contact you. Animal descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics. This cat is to be kept indoors only.

About Nathan

What life with Nathan looks like

Nathan is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs secure fencing and understanding neighbors due to protective barking behavior

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nathan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nathan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nathan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nathan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nathan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nathan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nathan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
