How to protect windows, balconies and terraces for your cats Published on October 5, 2023 by Brigit THE RISKS OF WINDOW FALLS Falls from windows or balconies are the number one cause of accidental death in apartment cats, so it is up to you to take all necessary precautions to prevent this from happening. But old ideas are hard to kill. NO, the cat is not elastic AND NO, it does not always land on its feet without getting hurt! Most often, the accident will happen because the cat is sitting on the edge of a window, intrigued by a fly flying, a bird passing by... it wanted to catch it. Or even just surprised by a noise, a sudden movement or the unexpected closing of the window. If not the natural curiosity of the cat... Cats, even adults, can be tempted to go over a railing to explore their environment. Kitten are naturally very energetic and completely unaware of danger, they can end up spinning around a rail or on a window ledge. Even from the first floor, a cat can be seriously injured when falling. With luck, it may get out with "simple fractures"... but the damage can be much more serious, even leading to the premature death of your animal. How to set up protection for windows, balconies and terraces for your cats? The first basic advice is to always be very vigilant when leaving windows open and not to leave your cat unattended. When the window is open this way, there is a free space between the frame and the top of the window. This very small space, which prevents a human being from entering a house or apartment, can still allow a small animal... like a cat. But when the cat passes through this opening, it cannot move forward or back. And the more it tries to get out, the more it is pulled by its body weight into the tip of the triangle formed by the window and the frame. Its claws have no grip. It's as if its body was caught in a vice that gradually tightens around it. Death by suffocation, internal bleeding etc... are the consequences of this compression, which could be much more easily avoided if everyone knew the risks of these windows. Comment protéger fenêtres, balcons et terrasses pour vos chats Publié le 5 octobre 20235 octobre 2023 par Brigit LES RISQUES DE LA DÉFENESTRATION Les chutes de fenêtres ou balcons sont la première cause de mortalité accidentelle chez les chats d’appartement, il vous appartient donc de prendre toutes les précautions pour que ça n’arrive pas. Mais les idées reçues ont la vie dure. NON, le chat n’est pas élastique ET NON il ne retombe pas toujours sur ses pattes sans se blesser ! Le plus souvent l’accident arrivera parce qu’installé sur le rebord d’une fenêtre, et intrigué par une mouche qui vole, un oiseau qui passe… il aura voulu l’attraper. Ou encore simplement surpris par un bruit, un geste brusque ou la fermeture intempestive de la fenêtre. Si ce n’est la curiosité naturelle du chat… Les chats, même adultes, peuvent être tentés de passer par-dessus une rambarde pour explorer leur environnement. Les chatons étant eux par nature très turbulents et totalement inconscients du danger, peuvent se retrouver à faire la toupie autour d’un barreau ou sur un rebord de fenêtre. Même du 1er étage un chat peut se faire très mal en tombant. Avec de la chance il pourra s’en sortir avec de « simples fractures »… mais les dégâts peuvent être bien plus sérieux, jusqu’au décès prématuré de votre animal. Comment mettre en place une protection pour fenêtres, balcons et terrasses pour vos chats ? Le premier conseil de base est d’être toujours hyper vigilant lorsque vous laissez des fenêtres ouvertes et de ne pas laisser votre chat sans surveillance. Mais le mieux, pour une totale sécurité, est d’installer des protections à vos fenêtres, terrasses et balcons. Aller en haut Faire appel à un professionnel ? Avec un filet qui peut s’ouvrir à volonté… pour arroser les plantes, fermer les volets ou regarder dehors par exemple. Fabrication Française !!! QUELQUES EXEMPLES D’INSTALLATIONS FAITES PAR NOS ADOPTANTS POUR PROTÉGER LEURS CHATS : VIDÉO de l’installation d’une terrasse / patio privé pour Cookie et Bianco, chats adoptés avec notre association en 2019 Vidéo de fenêtres protégées par des grillages qui montre que les chats sont HEUREUX LE DANGER DES FENÊTRES OSCILLO-BATTANTES Ces fenêtres au système permettant d’entrebâiller et bloquer une fenêtre peuvent provoquer de graves accidents ou même le décès de votre chat. Lorsque la fenêtre est ouverte de cette façon, il existe un espace libre entre l’encadrement et le haut de la fenêtre. Cet espace très réduit, s’il empêche un être humain de pouvoir pénétrer dans une maison ou un appartement, peut néanmoins laisser passer un petit animal…. comme le chat. Mais lorsque le chat passe par cette ouverture, il ne peut plus ni avancer, ni reculer. Et plus il cherche à se sortir de là, plus il est entraîné par le poids de son corps dans la pointe du triangle formée par la fenêtre et le montant. Ses griffes n’ont aucune prise. C’est comme si son corps était pris dans un étau qui se resserre progressivement sur lui. Mort par étouffement, hémorragie interne etc… telles sont les conséquences de cette compression, qui pourrait bien plus être évitée si tout le monde connaissait les risques de ces fenêtres.
