Luis was rescued from a euthanasia center along with other dogs. He was extremely fearful and had no trust in humans. Luis gets along well with other dogs. The shelter has been working with Luis for some time now. He initially refused to wear a harness or collar, but he's now tolerating it. It can only be put on when he is in his kennel. There isn't always enough time to work with all the fearful dogs, but there has been progress with Luis. He now walks on a leash inside the shelter. Luis enjoys going outside to the field with the other dogs where he runs around and also comes to volunteers for treats. He doesn't really like being petted. That is still something they are working on, but the poor guy has definitely had bad experiences with people. Hands are only fun if there is a piece of sausage or a cookie in them. Luis has been tested multiple times for leishmania and despite that he showed symptoms in his ears and nose. The vet advised to apply a mixture of glucantime and saline solution on his ears and nose daily. He didn't receive any glucantime injections, which helped and now his nose and ears are back to normal. Sometimes leishmania is not active in the blood but can be present in isolated areas. We hope Luis will continue to progress and one day find a family of his own.

Almanimal Castalla Input 25 juni 2026: Luis is samen met andere honden uit een dodingsstation gehaald. Hij was ontzettend bang en moest niets van mensen weten. Met andere honden kan Luis wel prima overweg. Er wordt al een behoorlijke tijd met Luis gewerkt in het asiel. Hij wilde helemaal geen harnas om of halsband, maar inmiddels laat hij dat toe. Het kan alleen maar omgedaan worden als hij in de kennel is. Er is niet altijd genoeg tijd om met alle bange honden te werken, maar er is progressie bij Luis. Hij loopt inmiddels aan de riem binnen het asiel. Luis gaat graag naar buiten op het veld met de andere honden. Hij loopt dan lekker te rennen en komt ook bij de vrijwilligers wat lekkers halen. Hij laat zich niet echt aaien. Daar wordt ook aan gewerkt, maar de arme kerel heeft zeker weten geen goeie ervaringen met mensen. Handjes zijn alleen leuk als er een stukje worst of een koekje in zit. Luis is meerdere malen negatief getest op leishmania, maar toch had hij kenmerken in zijn oren en op zijn neus. De dierenarts adviseerde om dagelijks een mengsel van glucantime en een fysiologische zoutoplossing op zijn oren en neus te smeren. Hij kreeg dus geen glucantime injecties. Dat heeft geholpen en nu zijn zijn neus en oren weer normaal. Soms is leishmania niet actief in het bloed, maar wel op geïsoleerde plekken. We hopen dat Luis nog vooruitgang boekt en op een dag ook zijn familie vindt.
