Abandoned, confused, and searching for safety—Santina arrived with us in a way we’ll never forget. One early afternoon, we noticed someone near the entrance, accompanied by a dog. At first, the scene seemed suspicious: someone moving quietly, looking uncertain, with a frightened dog by their side. We approached to speak with them, bracing ourselves for the worst. But what we’d initially feared might be an act of cruelty turned out to be quite the opposite. This man was a kind Samaritan. He’d heard the desperate cries of a dog who’d been left behind inside a home after her owner was arrested and sent to prison. Santina had been abandoned, alone, confused, and waiting for someone who would never come back. We don’t know exactly how long she’d been there—how many days she’d cried, or how long she’d survived on whatever scraps remained in that house. But we do know that one kind soul had heard her cries, cared enough to step in, and brought her to safety. When Santina arrived, she was terrified. She’d spent an unknown amount of time completely alone, wondering where her family had gone, trying to make sense of why no one was coming back for her. She was scared, confused, and overwhelmed by everything around her. We took her straight to our vet, where she received a full health check and was spayed. We also discovered that she’d never been microchipped. Santina is roughly 5 to 6 years old, and the fact that she had no microchip suggests she’d likely never been properly registered—never had the security of identification, and possibly never received the routine care every dog deserves: vaccinations, regular check-ups, and essential protection. She arrived riddled with worms and carrying the emotional weight of fear, confusion, and abandonment. Yet despite it all, Santina is gentle. She’s nervous and easily becomes overwhelmed when around other dogs. However, she’s not aggressive—she’s simply trying to protect herself. After being left alone for so long, she’s terrified of being abandoned again, and our cage environment is simply too much for her. She doesn’t understand why she’s here or why her life changed so suddenly. And every day, she’s been desperately searching for the stability of a forever home. With people, Santina is sweet and affectionate. She loves walks, cuddles, training, and spending time with our volunteers. She’s yearning for connection, reassurance, and a sense of safety. All Santina needs now is patience, kindness, and a calm home where she can finally breathe, unwind, and learn once and for all that she’ll never be left behind again. We’re incredibly grateful that Santina is now being fostered by one of our volunteers, with the hope of adoption!
