Living with leishmaniasis is always a challenge, but there are now many treatment options with leishmanicidal drugs such as Milteforan and especially the leishmanicidal drug Allopurinol. However, if this mean Mediterranean disease is simply ignored, it condemns the dog to a painful life and often to a slow death. Our little Nela already saw this coming when animal welfare workers from Arconatura discovered the sad female dog. Nela was weak and lying on a plot of land; neighbors said she had been alone there all along, and the owner no longer cared for her. Anyone who knows the typical symptoms of leishmaniasis doesn't need a blood test to know something is wrong with Nela. The concerned volunteers from Linares contacted the owner Nelas - and since he didn't care at all what happened to his female dog, they took the kind, eight-year-old girl to the animal shelter. During initial examinations, the veterinarian also confirmed that Nela was in the middle of a leishmaniasis flare-up, which would have likely been fatal if left untreated. Nela received the necessary help with a leishmanicidal medication in August and is now on Allopurinol. Her skin is being treated, and the calm dog clearly enjoys not suffering from unbearable itching all day long anymore. It will probably take some time before the bald spots in her coat grow back, but slowly, the shine returns to Nelas' tired eyes. She enjoys every affection and is happy with every kind word. Nela is looking for a quiet home where she can learn what it's like to be a spoiled and especially loved family dog. She really wants to join people and discover the world that was always kept from her. Please give Nela a chance to live the life she has longed for so many years - and who knows, we could imagine that in this now so quiet, gentle creature, a lively terrier is waiting to learn how to play with a ball in the garden ...

Das Leben mit Leishmaniose ist immer eine Herausforderung, aber inzwischen gibt es viele Behandlungsmöglichkeiten mit Leishmaniziden wie Milteforan und vor allem dem Leishmanistatikum Allopurinol. Wenn diese gemeine Mittelmeerkrankheit aber einfach ignoriert wird, verurteilt man den Hund zu einem qualvollen Leben und oft zu einem langsamen Tod. Dem sah unsere kleine Nela schon entgegen, als Tierschützer der Arconatura die traurige Hündin entdeckten. Nela lag entkräftet auf einem Grundstück, Nachbarn erzählten, dass sie dort immer allein sei, der Besitzer kümmere sich nicht mehr um sie. Wer die typischen Symptome der Leishmaniose kennt, braucht keinen Bluttest, um zu wissen, was mit Nela nicht stimmt. Die besorgten Freiwilligen aus Linares setzten sich mit dem Halter Nelas in Verbindung – und da diesen nicht im Geringsten interessierte, was aus seiner Hündin wird, nahmen sie das freundliche, acht Jahre alte Mädchen mit ins Tierheim. Bei ersten Untersuchungen wurde dann auch durch den Tierarzt bestätigt, dass Nela mitten in einem Leishmanioseschub steckte, der unbehandelt für Nela wahrscheinlich den Tod bedeutet hätte. Nela bekam im August dann gleich die notwendige Hilfe mit einem leishmaniziden Medikament und ist nun auf Allopurinol eingestellt. Ihre Haut wird behandelt und die ruhige Hundedame genießt es sichtlich, nicht mehr den ganzen Tag unter unerträglichem Juckreiz zu leiden. Bis die kahlen Stellen in ihrem Fell zugewachsen sind, wird es wohl noch eine Weile dauern, aber langsam kehrt der Glanz in Nelas müde Augen zurück. Sie genießt jede Zuneigung und freut sich über jedes gute Wort. Nela sucht ein ruhiges Zuhause, wo sie erfahren darf, wie es ist, ein verwöhnter und vor allem geliebter Familienhund zu sein. Sie möchte sich so gern an Menschen anschließen und die Welt entdecken, die ihr immer vorenthalten blieb. Bitte geben Sie Nela eine Chance, das Leben zu führen, nach dem sie sich schon so viele Jahre sehnt – und wer weiß, wir könnten uns gut vorstellen, dass in dem jetzt noch so stillen, zärtlichen Wesen ein lustiger Terrier darauf wartet, noch zu lernen, wie man mit einem Ball durch den Garten tobt …
