Tio is the definition of a contradiction. An imposing shepherd with the heart of a puppy. Or more accurately, the heart of a teenager. He is not young, yet there is a spark in his eyes you usually see in younger dogs. He is not slim, yet his movement is so graceful you wonder how a dog of his size can be so light on his feet. He uses his big paws with such gentleness when asking for affection that it almost feels like he is the one petting you. His solid, sturdy presence can turn into effortless agility in a split second if you call him over. His age does not stop him from flirting with any female dog who happens to pass by. He is that middle aged uncle at family gatherings who says, “I’ll sit with the young ones,” which is exactly how he got his name. (Tio means “uncle” in Spanish.) We do not know where or how Tio lived before he ended up at the municipal shelter in Krestena. We imagine that, before being tied up there, he may have lived near a taverna, surviving on scraps that were not suitable for him. He came to us overweight, and at his age, that takes a toll. With proper nutrition and gentle exercise, he will return to a healthy weight and become even more playful and full of life. He is good with other dogs and exceptionally good with people. He has great patience, which he showed us when, despite not enjoying it, he stayed still while we removed the heavy mats hanging from his chest and hips and trimmed his long nails. Tio is a balanced, middle aged dog who, with his steady nature and kind temperament, can become a wonderful companion. The kind of dog who will walk beside his people on relaxed outings and share in a calm, easy daily life.
