Benji is a 7-year-old mixed-breed male dog born on March 10, 2019. He can be very affectionate and gentle within his family, but in certain situations, he tends to take on a lot of responsibility, which can lead to tension. This was especially true when he was with his owners and their baby. When he was just with his family, he could be very relaxed and pleasant. The problems arose mainly when the situation changed, such as when visitors came, when there was tension, or when another dog was aggressive towards him. His previous owner describes that Benji bit several times over time and that's why he wore a muzzle when visitors came. They tried to find out what triggered his behavior, but couldn't find a clear pattern. He is also described as protective of people and toys. For us, it's important not to simply label him as "unpredictable." What we do know is that Benji seems to have taken on more responsibility in certain situations. When he feels he needs to decide what happens, his behavior can escalate. A dog that tries to solve situations on its own can become more and more extreme when human guidance is insufficient. This means that we look not only at what he did in the past, but especially at the circumstances in which it happened. An incident is an event, not a character trait. Therefore, our approach is to look at what happened before, what responsibility the dog had at that moment, and what changes when the human takes that responsibility again. For Benji, clear guidance will be an important part of his new life. He doesn't need to decide who enters the house, what another dog is planning, or how to handle a tense situation. His owner must take clear and calm responsibility. The less Benji feels he needs to arrange something himself, the more space he will have to process situations without immediately resorting to his old strategies. This doesn't require someone who is constantly on top of him. It requires someone who looks ahead, can guide situations well, and doesn't wait until Benji has already taken the initiative. Visits, for example, are not something he should be allowed to decide how to handle. His people provide the framework, so he doesn't have to bear that responsibility. Benji doesn't seem to have problems with other dogs. According to his previous owner, he reacted mainly when another dog was aggressive towards him and sometimes with larger dogs. This is different from a dog that can't handle other dogs. At the same time, it does mean that meetings and contact with other dogs must be carefully guided. We look at the situation and how much responsibility Benji has in it. For Benji, we are looking for a quiet household with adults who can provide clarity and understand that predictability is important to him. A family with young children is not automatically excluded, because we know he was very loving to the baby in his previous family. But the entire family life, visits, movement, noise, and unexpected situations require adult guidance. The children themselves should never be responsible for guiding Benji. Benji doesn't need a life where everything is avoided. He needs people who show him: you don't have to solve this, we will. That is probably the most important key for this dog. Not giving him more and more freedom to make his own choices, but giving him clarity about which choices are not his to make. At Stichting Animal's Faith, taking back that responsibility is an important part of our approach. Whoever can provide a stable environment for Benji, can guide situations in advance, and is willing to consistently take responsibility, can make a big difference for him.

Benji is een gecastreerde kruising reu van 7 jaar, geboren op 10 maart 2019. Een lieve en betrokken hond die graag bij zijn mensen is en vooral een gevoelige jongen is die nét wat meer oppikt van wat er om hem heen gebeurt. Binnen zijn vorige gezin kon Benji heel prettig en ontspannen zijn. Hij was aanhankelijk en volgens zijn eigenaar ook heel lief met de baby. De moeilijkheden ontstonden vooral wanneer situaties ingewikkelder werden, bijvoorbeeld bij bezoek of wanneer een andere hond spanning of agressie naar hem liet zien. Benji leek in die situaties steeds meer het gevoel te krijgen dat hij zelf iets moest doen: opletten, inschatten of reageren. Dat patroon is in zijn vorige situatie steeds groter geworden. Uiteindelijk zijn er een paar bijtincidenten geweest. Zijn eigenaren hebben veel geprobeerd en verschillende trainers ingeschakeld, maar het lukte niet altijd om te begrijpen waarom bepaalde situaties voor hem zoveel moeilijker waren dan andere. Bij ons kijken wij vooral naar wat een hond nodig heeft om zich veilig te voelen en niet zelf verantwoordelijk te hoeven zijn voor situaties. En daar zien we bij Benji een heel andere kant. Bij ons is hij superlief en loopt hij netjes aan de lijn. Hij heeft niet veel sturing nodig. Benji is vooral een gevoelige hond die er baat bij heeft wanneer zijn mensen hem op de juiste momenten helpen en verantwoordelijkheid overnemen als een situatie voor hem ingewikkeld wordt. Hij hoeft dus niet voortdurend gestuurd of gemanaged te worden. Juist wanneer zijn mensen duidelijk maken “dit hoef jij niet op te lossen, ik regel het”, ontstaat er ruimte voor Benji om gewoon hond te zijn. Benji lijkt niet per definitie moeite te hebben met andere honden. Zijn eerdere reacties werden vooral beschreven bij honden die agressief naar hem reageerden en soms bij grotere honden. Met de juiste begeleiding hoeft dat niet te betekenen dat hij andere honden moet vermijden. Voor kinderen geldt hetzelfde. Benji kan heel lief zijn met een kind, maar een gezin met jonge kinderen brengt natuurlijk ook drukte, onverwachte bewegingen en bezoek met zich mee. Volwassenen zullen daarom de begeleiding op zich moeten nemen. Voor Benji zoeken we vooral mensen die een gevoelige hond goed kunnen lezen en hem rust en duidelijkheid kunnen geven. Geen mensen die voortdurend bovenop hem zitten, maar mensen die op tijd kunnen helpen wanneer hij iets lastig vindt. Want Benji hoeft niet opnieuw te leren hoe hij de wereld zelf moet regelen. Hij mag juist ervaren: “Je hoeft dit niet zelf op te lossen.
