A few days ago, we received a case of an elderly dog that had entered the shelter. The shelter houses dogs from all over the province of Córdoba, so their origins and pasts could not be determined. As soon as we saw his picture, we knew he didn't come from a paradise. His eyes betrayed fear and helplessness, and a chain of links around his neck suggested he hadn't had an easy life. When we asked about him, we were told he was aggressive and wouldn't let anyone touch him. With all this, we knew he would end his days in the shelter: an older, mixed-breed dog with a difficult temperament had all the odds against him. If the case was complex, it became even more difficult: this poor dog had entered the shelter with a companion... A person (who will remain anonymous) told us the story of both animals firsthand. It turns out they came from a situation of continuous abuse. For a long time, they had tried to take the animals out of where they lived, since their owners not only didn't provide the basics, but also abused them. After several failed attempts over time, they finally managed to take the dogs out of the place with the help of the police. This same person told us that the seizure was difficult, since one of them wouldn't let anyone touch him, due to the traumatic situation from which he derived. After this story, involving two animals in a context of abuse, it was impossible to leave one of them in the shelter, or to choose between them. Therefore, yesterday we went to get them. We took this couple out of the shelter and gave them new names: NABIL and KAI. We found two animals that had hardly known a good human gesture. Despite being disoriented, from the first minute we saw the reaction of appeasement and calm. Both let themselves be manipulated and the elderly dog didn't show any sign of aggression, his gaze only betrayed gratitude. They are now in our care. At this point, we need to do everything possible for them. They will need check-ups and sterilizations. We need to face those veterinary expenses plus the payments for the canine residence where we have them. It's an over-effort we've made, because we only had the ability to help one. KAI is a small mixed-breed 8-9 years old. As soon as his shyness disappears and he starts to trust, the tenderness that hides his tiny body will emerge. NABIL is a 3-year-old bodeguero mix. He is patient and sweet. Grateful to the first show of affection. They are given up for adoption with: follow-ups, contract, European passport, microchip, vaccines, blood tests, deworming, sterilization and veterinary check-up. They are in Córdoba but can travel to any point in Spain. All this will be at zero cost to the adopter, our Association assumes both the veterinary expenses and the animal's transfer. We want to thank the person who put us in the situation and informed us about these animals. Without their collaboration, we would have left one of them behind.
