Dogs name: Nigel & Norman Age: 3 years old Current location: Port Glasgow, Scotland I CAN LIVE WITH Children: yes, dog savvy 5+ Cats: Untested Dogs: No A BIT ABOUT ME Personality: Nigel and Norman are a lovely pair of three-year-old brothers who have settled beautifully into foster care. Having been through the upheaval of losing their home, they have clearly found comfort and reassurance in having each other by their side. Their bond is an important part of who they are, and they have supported one another while adjusting to their new surroundings. Both boys have shown themselves to be affectionate and loving with their foster family. When they first arrived, they needed a little time to take everything in, but they soon began to relax into their new routine. They particularly enjoy their morning interactions with their fosterer, greeting her with kisses and cuddles and showing that they are very happy to be around their people. Nigel is the funny one of the pair and certainly has a character all of his own. He is a wonderfully stubborn Bulldog who knows his own mind, but behind his cheeky and sometimes mischievous nature is the biggest heart. Nigel absolutely loves his people and is happiest when he is getting attention, affection and plenty of fuss. He has a real ability to make you laugh with his funny ways and larger-than-life character. He is the sort of boy who will keep his family smiling while also making sure they know just how much he loves them. Norman is the more chilled and laid-back of the two. He can be a little nervous in new situations and may need some reassurance while he works out that everything is okay, but once he feels safe, his incredibly sweet nature shines through. Norman is a gentle, loving boy who has so much affection to give. He enjoys being close to his people and is happiest when he knows he is safe, secure and surrounded by those he trusts. Although they have very different personalities, Nigel and Norman complement each other beautifully. Nigel brings the fun, cheekiness and Bulldog stubbornness, while Norman is the calmer, softer soul. Both boys have enormous hearts and are looking for a home where they can continue to feel safe, loved and valued for the wonderful characters they are. Behaviour: Nigel and Norman do enjoy rough-and-tumble play with each other. They can be quite playful together and enjoy having a good wrestle and chase around, showing a fun and silly side to their relationship. Their play is mutual and they appear comfortable with each other, naturally understanding when to engage and when to settle back down. They enjoy having each other as a playmate and their playful interactions are part of the lovely bond they share. Nigel and Norman can follow basic commands and have shown that they understand cues such as sit, paw, down and wait . They respond well to their foster family and are continuing to build on their training as part of their daily routine. As with any Bulldog, they can occasionally have a stubborn moment, particularly Nigel, but with patience, consistency and positive reinforcement they respond well. Their foster family continues to reinforce these commands so that they remain familiar and reliable in different situations. Nigel and Norman both absolutely love human contact and are very affectionate boys. They enjoy being stroked, fussed and having plenty of attention from their people. They are comfortable with physical contact and particularly enjoy having their backs and, most importantly, their bottoms scratched! In fact, a good bum scratch is a firm favourite for both boys and will happily earn you plenty of appreciation. They are very receptive to affection and enjoy being close to their humans, making them lovely, cuddly companions. Needs: Nigel and Norman would thrive in a loving family home where they are treated as part of the family and given plenty of affection, patience and attention. They are adaptable boys who we feel could fit happily into a variety of home environments, whether that is a quieter household or a busier family home. The most important thing for these two is that they are kept together and have people who understand the needs of English Bulldogs and are prepared to give them the time, care and love they deserve. They enjoy human company and being involved in family life, so a home where they will have plenty of interaction and companionship would suit them particularly well. We feel they could be a wonderful addition to a family with children, provided the children understand how to interact appropriately with dogs. Equally, they would be very happy in an adult-only home where they can be thoroughly spoiled. Ultimately, the right home for Nigel and Norman is one where they are loved, included and allowed to continue growing in confidence together. They have so much love to give and, as long as they have each other and a family who loves them, we feel they could thrive in many different types of home. A garden is a must for these boys, as they love to run around and explore. Walk/exercise: Nigel and Norman walk well on the lead and are generally easy to manage, although they can pull when they become excited or when something catches their attention. They particularly enjoy seeing other dogs and can be keen to say hello and have a play, so their enthusiasm can sometimes make them pull towards other dogs. Both boys are walked wearing harnesses, which they are comfortable with and allows their foster family to manage them safely and comfortably. They have been enjoying their walks together and are happy to explore their surroundings. Neither Nigel nor Norman has been allowed off lead while in foster care, so their recall has not yet been fully assessed. For this reason, any future off-lead training should be introduced gradually and in a secure, enclosed area before considering allowing them off lead in open spaces. Overall, they are enjoyable boys to walk, and their lead manners are continuing to develop with consistency and positive reinforcement. Toilet trained: Nigel is fully house trained and has had no accidents in the home while in foster care. Norman is doing well with his house training but has had a few accidents, particularly while he has been settling into his new environment and routine. These have been occasional rather than a regular issue, and his foster family is continuing to reinforce his toilet routine with regular opportunities to go outside and plenty of praise when he gets it right. We would expect this to continue improving as Norman becomes more settled and familiar with his routine. Travel: Nigel and Norman are becoming increasingly comfortable with travelling and have shown good improvement since arriving in foster. Initially, they were more unsettled and could become stressed during journeys, but they are now much more relaxed and are coping better with being in the car. Their foster family has been taking things at their own pace and allowing them time to become familiar with travelling, which has helped build their confidence. Because of this we will consider homes up to four hours away from their foster home. We recommend using a seatbelt restraint or travel crate whenever transporting dogs. Things to be aware of: Norman has allergies which are currently being successfully managed with Zenrelia, 1½ tablets once daily, alongside hypoallergenic kibble to help keep his allergies under control. It is important that Norman remains on both his prescribed medication and hypoallergenic diet in his new home to help maintain his health and prevent his allergies from flaring up. Norman has also been assessed by a heart specialist following the detection of a low-grade heart murmur. The specialist feels that this is currently manageable through a controlled diet and gentle, appropriate exercise, and he does not require any specific cardiac treatment at this time. Norman has also undergone a BOAS assessment. Following his assessment, the specialist felt that he does not currently require BOAS surgery and that his breathing and airway can be managed through careful weight management, a controlled diet and appropriate, gentle exercise. His new family will need to be mindful of all of Norman's ongoing medical needs and ensure that he maintains a healthy weight. His exercise should remain gentle and appropriate, with care taken not to overexert him, particularly in warm weather. His medication and diet must be continued as advised, and regular veterinary monitoring will be important to ensure that his allergies, heart murmur and breathing remain well managed. Norman's medical needs are manageable, but they are an important part of his ongoing care and his new family will need to be committed to maintaining the routine that is currently keeping him happy and well. Sometimes bulldogs are excited to play and don’t realise their size, any young children in the home must be supervised, as they have the potential to jump and knock children over. Children must understand that bulldogs need time to settle in and have space to rest peacefully and uninterrupted. Nigel & Norman's Story Nigel and Norman are 3-year-old brothers who have very sadly been surrendered into our care following a relationship breakdown. As always, we kindly ask for no judgement towards the boys' owners. This was a heartbreaking decision for them to make, and we're incredibly grateful that they trusted us with Nigel and Norman rather than risking them falling into the wrong hands. On Friday, the boys were collected by our fabulous volunteer, Davie, who transported them to their wonderful foster home with Nicola and her family in Scotland. Overall, both boys appear to be in good health, although they each have a dry nose, and Norman has a few small patches of itchy skin. Hopefully, these are issues we can get on top of quickly. As with all of our foster dogs, both boys will be visiting the vets for a full health check. Nigel and Norman have settled into foster life beautifully, no doubt helped by having each other for comfort and support. Nicola has been sleeping downstairs with them during their first few days, and each morning she's been greeted by two handsome faces eager for cuddles and affection. Please join us in giving Nigel and Norman a very warm welcome to the Geordie Bullies family. Please note that Nigel and Norman have only just arrived in foster and are not available for adoption. Applications are not open at this time, so please do not attempt to apply for them just yet. We will share their adoption poster once they have reached the end of their assessment period.
