The province of Belluno recorded 203,585 residents by the end of last year, confirming a negative trend that has been ongoing for at least seven consecutive years. This population has almost 26% over 65 years old: the aging index shows that there are 215.6 elderly people for every 100 young people, while the average age is now nearly 47 years. On the other hand, families are increasing (also due to fragmentation caused by separations and divorces) and at the end of 2017 there were a total of 93,609, with an average of 2.16 members. Dogs registered in the Belluno registry as of April this year are 31,921: this means that one out of three Belluno families owns a dog. A percentage that places the province of Belluno in the penultimate position among the Veneto provinces: in fact, in Treviso and Rovigo, there is one dog for every 2.2 families, in Vicenza one dog for every 2.3 families, in Padova one dog for every 2.5 families, in Verona one dog for every 2.8 families, and only in Venice is there one dog for every 3.2 families. However, these percentages are very likely distorted by the number (high) of unregistered dogs: in Belluno, for example, just a few weeks ago we reported the presence of more than 7,500 dogs without microchips and the same is likely to happen in the other Veneto provinces. If this were the case, the averages would rise and, regarding Belluno, it would mean that one person out of five and one family out of two would have a dog as a companion animal. The fact is that, regardless of the numbers, the presence of dogs in families with such elderly members or in increasingly frequently disintegrating family units makes it urgent for the municipalities to address the issue of abandonment - even forced - of many animals. In Italy there are excellent examples of administrations that have activated a service to assist people who can no longer or do not want to take care of their dog. And it's time for Belluno to talk about it!

Al 31 dicembre dell'anno scorso la provincia di Belluno ha registrato 203.585 abitanti, confermando il trend negativo in atto da almeno 7 anni consecutivi. Si tratta di una popolazione di cui quasi il 26% ha più di 65 anni: l'indice di vecchiaia evidenzia, infatti, che ci sono ben 215,6 anziani ogni 100 giovani, mentre l'età media è ormai di quasi 47 anni. In compenso le famiglie aumentano (anche in virtù della frammentazione legata a separazioni e divorzi) e alla fine del 2017 erano complessivamente 93.609, con una media di 2,16 componenti. I cani registrati all'anagrafe di Belluno ad aprile di quest'anno sono 31.921: ciò significa che una famiglia bellunese su tre ne possiede uno. Una percentuale che colloca la provincia di Belluno al penultimo posto tra le provincie venete: a Treviso e Rovigo, infatti, c'è un cane ogni 2,2 famiglie, a Vicenza ogni 2,3, a Padova ogni 2,5 famiglie, a Verona ogni 2,8 e solo a Venezia c'è un cane ogni 3,2 famiglie. Si tratta, però, di percentuali molto probabilmente falsate dal numero (elevato) di cani non registrati: a Belluno, ad esempio, solo qualche settimana abbiamo denunciato la presenza di oltre 7.500 cani senza microchip e altrettanto accadrà verosimilmente nelle altre provincie venete. Se così fosse le medie salirebbero e, per quanto riguarda Belluno, significherebbe che una persona su 5 e una famiglia su 2 avrebbe un cane come animale da compagnia. Sta di fatto che, qualunque siano i numeri, la presenza di cani in famiglie con componenti così anziani o in nuclei familiari che si sfaldano sempre più frequentemente rende urgente un interessamento dei comuni al tema dell'abbandono -anche forzato- di tanti esemplari. In Italia ci sono ottimi esempi di amministrazioni che hanno attivato un servizio di assistenza alle persone più deboli che non possono o non vogliono più accudire il proprio cane. E anche a Belluno è ora che se ne parli!
