Some dogs seem to step into the world bursting with energy, yet deep down their nervous systems are constantly “on.” Gatsby is one such dog. Gatsby is a wire-haired dachshund, born in December 2024. As a young pup, he ended up with a young couple, and it quickly became apparent that he was highly sensitive to stimuli. To support him as best as possible, they enrolled him in a puppy class and later in a course focused on reactivity management. Despite all their efforts, Gatsby continued to struggle with regulating his stress levels. Around eight months of age, his behavior increasingly began to focus on his owner, and several biting incidents occurred. Unfortunately, we see this kind of behavior more frequently in dachshunds. They’re intelligent, independent dogs that can be sensitive to high stress levels. When the emphasis is primarily on obedience and there’s insufficient room for relaxation and stress regulation, tension can keep building up. With plans for a child on the horizon, it was ultimately decided—however difficult it may have been—that Gatsby would be better off in a place where intensive guidance is available. And so, he came to live with us. At our place, the focus isn’t on everything Gatsby needs to be able to do; rather, it’s on calmness, relaxation, and learning to regulate his stress. We practice quiet walks, mindful interactions, calmly accepting treats, and experiencing predictability. We’re not there yet, but Gatsby is already showing promising progress. He’s starting to find peace more and more often and gradually making space to learn new things. Little by little, we’re discovering who Gatsby really is underneath all the tension. Behind all that stress, we see a young dog with great potential who especially needs people who understand him and don’t overwhelm him. F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote The Great Gatsby. Our Gatsby may have a different life story, but he too deserves a new chapter with a happy ending. Sommige honden lijken vol energie de wereld in te stappen, maar van binnen staat hun zenuwstelsel continu "aan". Gatsby is zo'n hond. Gatsby is een ruwharige teckel, geboren in december 2024. Als jonge pup kwam hij terecht bij een jong stel, waar al snel opviel dat hij erg gevoelig was voor prikkels. Om hem zo goed mogelijk te begeleiden werden een puppycursus en later ook een cursus gericht op reactiviteit gevolgd. Ondanks alle inzet bleef Gatsby moeite houden met het reguleren van zijn spanning. Rond de leeftijd van acht maanden richtte zijn gedrag zich steeds vaker op het baasje en vonden er meerdere bijtincidenten plaats. Bij teckels zien we dit gedrag helaas vaker. Het zijn intelligente, zelfstandige honden die gevoelig kunnen zijn voor een te hoog stressniveau. Wanneer de nadruk vooral ligt op gehoorzaamheid en er onvoldoende ruimte is voor ontspanning en stressregulatie, kan spanning zich steeds verder opbouwen. Met een kinderwens in het vooruitzicht is uiteindelijk, hoe moeilijk ook, besloten dat Gatsby beter af zou zijn op een plek waar intensieve begeleiding mogelijk is. Zo is hij bij ons terechtgekomen. Bij ons ligt de focus niet op wat Gatsby allemaal moet kunnen, maar juist op rust, ontspanning en het leren reguleren van zijn spanning. We oefenen met rustige wandelingen, aandachtig contact maken, ontspannen snoepjes aannemen en het ervaren van voorspelbaarheid. We zijn er nog niet, maar Gatsby laat al mooie vooruitgang zien. Hij begint steeds vaker rust te vinden en maakt stap voor stap ruimte om nieuwe dingen te leren. Beetje bij beetje ontdekken we wie Gatsby nu eigenlijk écht is. Achter alle spanning zien we een jonge hond met veel potentie, die vooral behoefte heeft aan mensen die hem begrijpen en hem niet overvraagd laten raken. F. Scott Fitzgerald schreef ooit The Great Gatsby. Onze Gatsby heeft misschien een andere levensloop, maar ook hij verdient een nieuw hoofdstuk met een gelukkig einde.
