Today is World Dog Day, August 26th, and since we are still in the summer period, our thoughts turn to the numerous dogs that unfortunately are abandoned on the streets each year as if they were old objects to throw away. We would like to remind you of the anti-abandonment campaigns promoted and spread by many associations (including national ones) through a brief text that explains what it means to keep a dog with you, a living, sentient animal that is not a toy to get rid of when it has become boring for the person who once desired it so much. At home we have a dog. He has a name, an identity, and he is a living presence, very alive, sometimes more alive than other members of the family. He is not a doll, he does not sit in a corner watching us with button eyes. He constantly asserts his presence, because that is how he feels towards us, towards his pack, present. He has his small weight that occupies a space which deserves to be respected. He has small ears always alert, a tail that moves continuously, brown eyes always focused on one of us. He does not have the synthetic fur of stuffed toys, he loses it everywhere, when the season changes, but we do not brush him like a doll that must stay posed in the living room window. Because he is not a toy. A dog is not a toy, and this is a concept, rather, it is a value, that must be kept firmly in mind whenever we decide to get involved with one of them. If it breaks, you do not throw it away, you take care of it. If it is hungry, thirsty, wants to go out, you cannot pretend to feed it with an empty bowl or take it for a walk making it circle the couch. If it is boring, tiresome, in the way, you cannot put it away, forget it in a drawer, or on a road. Abandoned, this is the verb used, and not by chance, to break its heart. Because dogs are not chosen by a person, they simply fall in love with one of us. Enpa and Lav, through their appeals, want to emphasize the fact that abandoning an animal is a crime - punishable by up to one year in prison - and they address anyone who notices dogs wandering alone on roads and highways, inviting them to report strays, and, if needed, to act as witnesses. The National League for the Defense of the Dog, through its campaign, focuses on the danger and risks of accidents for dogs and people traveling by car caused by the wandering of unattended animals. La giornata mondiale del cane cade oggi, 26 agosto, e dal momento che siamo ancora in periodo estivo il pensiero corre ai numerosi cani che purtroppo ogni anno vengono abbandonati sulle strade come fossero vecchi oggetti da buttare. Vi vorremmo quindi ricordare le campagne anti abbandono che sono promosse e divulgate da molte associazioni (anche nazionali) attraverso un breve testo che racconta cosa significhi tenere un cane con sé, un animale vivo e senziente che non è un giocattolo di cui disfarsi quando ha stufato chi lo ha tanto desiderato. A casa abbiamo un cane. Ha un nome, un’identità quindi, ed è una presenza viva, vivissima, a volte più viva di noi altri membri della famiglia. Non è un pupazzo, non se ne sta appoggiato in un angolo ad osservarci con occhi di bottone. Afferma in continuazione la sua presenza, perché è così che si sente nei nostri confronti, nei confronti del suo branco, presente. Ha il suo piccolo peso che occupa uno spazio che merita di essere rispettato. Ha le orecchie piccole ma sempre vigili, la coda che si muove in continuazione, gli occhi nocciola puntati sempre verso qualcuno di noi. Non ha il pelo sintetico dei cuccioli di peluche, lo perde in giro ovunque, quando cambia la stagione, ma non lo pettiniamo come una bambola che deve stare in posa nella vetrinetta del salotto. Perché non è un giocattolo. Un cane non è un giocattolo ed è un concetto questo, anzi di più, è un valore, da tenere stretto nella mente sempre quando decidiamo di voler avere a che fare con uno di loro. Se si rompe, non si butta via, lo si cura. Se ha fame, sete, voglia di uscire, non si può fingere di sfamarlo con la ciotola vuota o di portarlo a spasso facendogli fare il giro del divano. Se annoia, stufa, è d’intralcio, non si può metterlo via, dimenticarlo dentro un cassetto, o su una strada. Abbandonato, è questo il verbo che viene usato, e non a caso, per spezzargli il cuore. Perché i cani non si scelgono un capo, semplicemente si innamorano di uno di noi. L’Enpa e la Lav, attraverso i loro appelli, vogliono sottolineare il fatto che abbandonare un animale costituisce un reato – punibile fino a un anno di reclusione – e si rivolgono a quanti notino cani vagare da soli su strade e autostrade, invitandoli a segnalare i randagi e, se dovrà servire, anche a fare da testimone. La Lega Nazionale Per La Difesa del Cane, invece, attraverso la campagna punta l’attenzione sulla pericolosità e i rischi di incidente per i cani e per le persone che viaggiano in auto causati dal vagabondare degli animali incustoditi. Il contatto che si può utilizzare per aiutare i cani in stato di abbandono è il numero verde Anas 800.841.148 ma si possono avvertire anche le forze dell’ordine. Anche noi di Apaca cerchiamo di dare il nostro contributo, raccogliendo e diffondendo informazioni utili affinché i cani rifiutati dalle famiglie possano trovare cure e protezione e tornare a vivere, come esseri viventi che possiedono coscienza e sensazioni, e non come bambolotti privi di anima di cui disfarsi all’arrivo della prima vacanza.
