The underlying thought of many modern "schools" is that the educational process must follow the character, peculiarities, age or breed of the individual, using soft methodologies such as positive reinforcement, attention to the dog's communication and understanding of its language. One of the educational work methods that have generated the most discussion, for better or worse, is the clicker training, that is, the use of a metal box that produces a "click" to guide the exercises requested from the dog: each click is initially associated with a reward so that the animal links the sound, immediate, neutral and always the same, to performing an action or task correctly. A proposito di attività e discipline sportive che vedono protagonisti i cani, si rende necessario fare anche una riflessione sui metodi di addestramento impiegati per raggiungere i risultati attesi, sia sul piano atletico che su quello dell’obbedienza. Tutto parte, in realtà, dall’educazione di base che è d’obbligo fornire al proprio cane, possibilmente fin da cucciolo, affinché riesca a stabilire un buon rapporto con gli umani e gli altri cani e a vivere fra loro in maniera educata e tranquilla. Anna Giulia Amato del team JustDog scrive che la differenza fra educazione e addestramento è imprescindibile ed è molto importante tenerla a mente. Fortunatamente, grazie anche al diffondersi di una cultura cinofila più attenta e aperta, in entrambi i casi i metodi coercitivi e violenti cui un tempo erano sottoposti i cani sono stati ampiamente soppiantati da prassi gentili e rispettose dell’animale e del suo particolare modo di sentire. Il pensiero di fondo di molte “scuole” odierne è che il procedimento educativo debba seguire il carattere, le peculiarità, l’età o la razza a cui l'esemplare appartiene, utilizzando metodologie soft, quali il rinforzo positivo, l’attenzione alla comunicazione del cane e la comprensione del suo linguaggio. Una delle modalità di lavoro educativo che più hanno fatto parlare di sé, nel bene e nel male, è quella del clicker trainer , ovvero l’utilizzo di una scatoletta metallica che produce appunto un “ click ” per guidare gli esercizi richiesti al cane: ad ogni click inizialmente viene associato un premio affinché l’animale colleghi il rumore, immediato, neutro e sempre uguale, al compiere un’azione o un compito in modo corretto.
