In just a short time in foster care, Sean has made enormous progress. He has learned to settle, enjoy life in a home and build a beautiful bond with his foster carer. Sadly, she can no longer keep him, and we have only a few days to find him the right forever home. Sean’s foster carer has completely fallen in love with him and wanted to adopt him. Sadly, because of unexpected personal circumstances, she is no longer able to do so. She is absolutely devastated. This is not because things have not worked out with Sean — quite the opposite. He has become an important part of her life. He loves being close to her, relaxing beside her on the sofa and enjoying the affection and security of being in a home. He has also given her a great deal of love and comfort during their time together. Their relationship is genuinely reciprocal, and Sean has shown just how much love and companionship he can give when he feels safe. Now we need to find someone who can give him the same opportunity. When Sean first came to the shelter, he struggled enormously with the environment. He could become highly anxious and overstimulated and would sometimes enter a repetitive cycle of chasing and biting his own tail. Once he reaches that state, his behaviour can become extremely intense, with growling and frantic attempts to continue the cycle, and there is a genuine risk that he will injure himself. Unfortunately, we know how serious that risk can be. Sean has previously injured both his tail and his paws through this behaviour, and the damage to one of his paws became so severe that part of it eventually had to be amputated. But Sean has made huge progress in foster care. This is not a story about a dog who cannot improve. It is a story about a dog who has shown us how much he can improve when someone understands him and gives him the right environment. His foster carer has learned that high-arousal activities, such as playing with a ball, are not helpful for Sean. Instead, she gives him plenty of opportunities for calm mental stimulation — searching for food, sniffing activities, enrichment toys, frozen Kongs and other activities that allow him to use his brain without becoming overstimulated. Most importantly, she has learned to recognise his early signals. With Sean, prevention is everything. We don't want to wait until he is already spinning, growling and trying to bite himself and then attempt to stop him. By that stage, he is already deeply caught up in the behaviour. The important work happens beforehand: understanding his triggers, noticing the small changes in his behaviour and redirecting him before that cycle takes hold. He has also learned a simple cue that helps him settle before he reaches that point. When his foster carer raises her hand and says “calma”, he understands that it is time to relax and is able to settle. This is part of helping him regulate himself before his anxiety or arousal escalates. For Sean, we are looking for a very specific type of home. He needs a quiet, predictable environment, with a consistent routine and someone who has the time and patience to really get to know him. Ideally, we are looking for a home without children, where life can be calm and predictable and where his person can learn to recognise his individual triggers and early warning signs. He needs someone who is prepared to work with him rather than simply react to his behaviour. And there is so much to work with. Sean is affectionate. He loves companionship. He enjoys being part of a home. He has formed a deep bond with his foster carer and has shown that he can give an enormous amount of love and comfort in return. Sean has already shown us the dog he can be when he feels safe and understood. He is affectionate, loving and capable of forming an incredibly strong bond with his person. He has so much to give. Now he needs someone who can see the potential in him, understand what he needs and give him the stability he deserves. Approx measurements: 45cms Approx weight 30/03/26: 17kg
