Yappa came into our care as an unclaimed stray and, at only around seven months old, he’s already had a pretty unsettled start to life. Now he’s looking for someone who can give him the stability, patience and guidance he needs to become the brilliant little dog we know he can be. He is vaccinated and microchipped. Due to his age, he is currently too young to be neutered and will therefore be rehomed on a neutering contract. Underneath the slightly unruly teenager is an incredibly sweet, affectionate and happy little dog! Yappa absolutely loves being with people. He’s a proper little cuddle bug who will happily settle at your feet or next to you on the sofa, loves a belly rub and isn’t shy about covering his favourite humans in kisses. He also has a brilliantly mischievous, playful side. He loves tug-of-war, chasing his tail, running around outside and generally having fun. He has plenty of puppy energy, but once he’s had his adventures, he is also very capable of settling down for a cuddle. He’s clever, keen to learn and VERY food motivated, which makes training him rewarding. He picks things up quickly and responds well to both treats and praise. He does have a habit of trying to eat anything he can get hold of, though, which can result in an upset tummy, so his new family will need to keep an eye on this! Yappa can be a bit of a frustrated greeter when he sees other dogs while on the lead. He can bark quite a lot because he is excited and frustrated that he can’t immediately get to them. Once appropriately introduced and able to interact, however, we see a very different side of him. He is playful and enjoys chasing and being chased by other dogs. We actually feel that living with the right resident dog could be really beneficial for him. However, he can be rather over-the-top in his play, so any resident dog would need to be confident, tolerant and happy living with an enthusiastic youngster who hasn’t quite learnt all his manners yet! No cats or small furries!! Yappa has a very strong prey drive towards cats and smaller animals. For this reason, he cannot live with cats or any small furry animals, and his adopters will need to be mindful of his prey drive when out and about. Yappa is mostly housetrained and knows how to ask to go outside when he needs the toilet. He has also started crate training and has made some lovely progress. He is happy to go into his crate for food, toys, chews and naps, although he isn’t yet comfortable with the door being closed or being left in there without somebody nearby. He currently has separation anxiety and does not cope well with being left alone. He may whine and bark when somebody leaves the room, so we are looking for a home where he won’t initially need to be left for periods of time. His adopters will need to work gradually and consistently on building his confidence and independence. This isn’t something that should be rushed, and his new family must be prepared to put the work in. We feel Yappa could live with sensible, dog-savvy children aged around 8+ who are comfortable around an energetic, excitable young dog. Yappa is an absolute sweetheart but he can be noisy. He can be overexcited. His manners need work. He’ll bark at dogs because he desperately wants to say hello, and he’s still learning how to cope without his humans beside him. Essentially, he’s a slightly chaotic seven-month-old youngster who hasn’t yet been taught quite how the world works! But he is also friendly, affectionate, intelligent, eager to learn and absolutely full of potential. We are looking for someone experienced, patient and committed who isn’t going to be fazed by the barking or expect everything to fall into place overnight. He needs consistent positive training, plenty of exercise and enrichment, sensible boundaries and, most importantly, someone willing to stick with him while he learns. In the right hands, we know this slightly unruly little lad is going to grow into an absolutely fantastic dog. He just needs someone willing to show him how.
