Small puppies are typically curious. They follow their noses and explore the world with great enthusiasm. Their minds are still filled with very few worries. That's why especially small puppies are in danger when living on the streets and by the roads. When Offred was found on the streets of Bucharest, he was only a couple of months old. Yet he had already experienced hardships. Offred's second hind leg was broken, possibly due to being run over by a car or becoming a victim of violence. Now the leg has healed, and it no longer seems to bother Offred. After moving to Carpen shelter kennel, Offred initially lived with a litter of same-age puppies. However, the other puppies constantly bullied Offred, and eventually he had to be moved to live alone. Since then, Offred has sometimes lived with adult dogs and got along well with them, but food is such an important resource for Offred that he ends up living alone because of the conflicts that arise during feeding times. When Offred gets food or treats, he is very restless and clearly concerned about losing them. It is important that in his future home, he can calmly get used to the idea that no one will ever take his food away from him again. Offred hasn't really had many good experiences in his young life, and he is therefore a typical uncertain young adult. Everything new excites him greatly. Offred needs a calm environment and a person who understands that forgetting bad experiences and gaining trust takes time. Under his uncertainty, he is a smart young boy who would have a lot to offer to the right person.

Pienet koiranpennut ovat tyypillisesti uteliaita. He seuraavat nenäänsä ja tutkivat maailmaa suurella innolla. Heidän mielessään on vielä hyvin vähän huolia. Juuri siksi erityisesti pienet pennut ovat vaarassa eläessään kaduilla ja teiden varsilla. Kun Offred löydettiin Bukarestin kaduilta, hän oli vasta parin kuukauden ikäinen. Silti hän oli jo ehtinyt kokea kovia. Offredin toinen takajalka oli murtunut, mahdollisesti jouduttuaan auton töytäisemäksi tai ilkivallan kohteeksi. Nyt jalka on parantunut, eikä näytä enää vaivaavan Offredia.Muutettuaan Carpen tarhalle Offred asui alkuun tarhalle tulleen samanikäisen pentueen kanssa. Muut pennut kuitenkin kiusasivat Offredia jatkuvasti ja lopulta hänet oli pakko siirtää asumaan yksin. Sen jälkeen Offred on välillä asunut narttujen kanssa ja tullut näiden kanssa hienosti toimeen, mutta ruoka on Offredille niin tärkeä resurssi että hän asuu ruokinta-aikoina syntyvien kiistojen vuoksi yksin. Offred on ruokaa tai herkkuja saadessaan hyvin levoton ja selvästi huolissaan, että menettää ne. Onkin tärkeää, että tulevassa kodissa hän saa rauhassa tottua ajatukseen, ettei kukaan enää ikinä vie häneltä ruokaa pois. Offred ei ole nuoren elämänsä aikana juuri ehtinyt saada hyviä kokemuksia ja hän onkin tyypillinen epävarma nuori aikuinen. Kaikki uusi jännittää häntä kovasti. Offred tarvitsee rauhallisen ympäristön ja ihmisen, joka ymmärtää että huonojen kokemusten unohtaminen ja luottamuksen saaminen vie aikaa. Epävarmuutensa alla hän on fiksu nuori poika, jolla olisi paljon annettavaa oikealle ihmiselle.
