tomcat Basti lived on the streets in Bonn Lessenich with some other cats. He was neither neutered nor microchipped and seemed not to have ever had a home or much contact with people. However, Basti gives us small signs that he might trust us in the near future. He spends most of his day in his hiding spot but allows us to approach. He only hisses when we try to touch him. While this may not seem promising at first, it is a step forward for a (originally) wild cat, as many shy cats maintain more distance and are more hostile. Basti does not make any attempts to attack, as he is simply afraid and wants to be left alone. He tolerates having photos taken or treats offered, but he is not yet enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately, Basti is FIV-positive and thus immunocompromised. FIV is commonly referred to as cat AIDS, but the term is misleading. The viral infection is not curable, but it is not a death sentence. FIV-positive cats can have a long, fulfilling life, but they are more susceptible to other illnesses and secondary infections. Most of the time, the virus can be symptom-free – so Basti currently shows no health limitations. To prevent the spread of FIV to other cats, we do not release FIV-positive cats like Basti into the general population and only place them with other FIV-positive fellow animals. In general, formerly wild cats are highly social. However, at our animal shelter, we currently have no other FIV-positive cat to house with Basti. We can therefore only assume that he is compatible. Whether with or without four-legged company, Basti needs a cat-experienced and patient home with little chaos. We are happy to advise you on FIV and a possible companionship. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations.

Kater Basti hat zusammen mit einigen anderen Katzen auf der Straße in Bonn Lessenich gelebt. Er war weder kastriert noch gekennzeichnet und wirkt auch nicht, als hätte er jemals ein Zuhause oder viel Kontakt zu Menschen gehabt. Immerhin gibt uns Basti kleine Zeichen, dass er uns vielleicht in naher Zukunft sein Vertrauen schenkt. Er verbringt zwar die meiste Zeit des Tages in seinem Versteck, aber lässt es zu, wenn wir uns nähern. Er beginnt erst zu fauchen, wenn man ihn anfassen will. Was erstmal nicht allzu vielversprechend klingt, ist für eine (eigentlich) wilde Katze schon ein Fortschritt – denn viele scheue Katzen fordern deutlich mehr Abstand ein und sind dabei feindseliger. Basti macht keine Anstalten anzugreifen, denn er ist einfach ängstlich und möchte seine Ruhe haben. Er toleriert es, wenn man Fotos macht oder Leckerchen anbietet, aber begeistert ist er davon (noch) nicht. Leider ist Basti FIV-positiv und somit immungeschwächt. FIV wird umgangssprachlich oft Katzenaids genannt, allerdings ist der Ausdruck irreführend. Die Viruserkrankung ist nicht heilbar, aber auch kein Todesurteil. FIV-positive Katzen können ein langes, erfülltes Katzenleben haben, sind jedoch anfälliger für andere Erkrankungen und Sekundärinfektionen. Die meiste Zeit kann das Virus selbst symptomfrei sein – so zeigt auch Basti aktuell keine gesundheitlichen Einschränkungen. Um die Ansteckungen weiterer Katzen zu verhindern, vermitteln wir Fiverlinge wie Basti nicht in Freigang und nur zu ebenfalls FIV-positiven Artgenossen. In der Regel sind (ehemals) wild lebende Katzen hoch sozial. Derzeit lebt bei uns im Tierheim allerdings keine weitere FIV-positive Katze, die wir mit Basti vergesellschaften können. Wir können daher nur mutmaßen, dass er verträglich ist. Ob mit oder ohne vierbeiniger Gesellschaft braucht Basti ein katzenerfahrenes und geduldiges Zuhause ohne viel Trubel.
