Chauen arrived at the pound in September 2023, around 1 year old at the time. He is a beautiful Malinois cross who was found, likely abandoned on the streets, and brought to the pound. Chauen has now spent almost three years living in a small cage – far too long for such a young dog with so much life and love to give. Despite these difficult conditions, his spirit is still bright and hopeful, although the loneliness is starting to show in his eyes. Recently, we have also begun to notice signs of stereotypical behaviour linked to the stress of long-term confinement. At first, Chauen shared his space with other dogs and enjoyed spending time on the patio with them. This ongoing stress has made him a little tense around some unfamiliar dogs inside the pound, so he now lives alone without a cage mate. However, he does occasionally spend time on the patio with another dog and is able to relax and enjoy that company in the right setting. Outside of the pound, everything changes for Chauen. On walks and outings with a dedicated volunteer, he shows a completely different side of himself. He is absolutely fine with other dog
