03-08-26 Meet Shiloh. Shiloh is a very special boy looking for a very special home. He originally came to us in 2022 as part of an unsold litter and was lucky enough to find a loving home. Sadly, his adopters are no longer able to manage his behavioural needs, so Shiloh has returned to us in the hope that we can find him a home that is better suited to him and where he can continue to thrive. Shiloh is a wonderfully funny, affectionate boy who absolutely adores his people. He has the biggest, goofiest grin and loves nothing more than a good chest tickle, playing and spending time with the people he trusts. He is also a complete water baby and absolutely loves playing in the river and streams! He is used to having a very active lifestyle, including 3 mile walks in the morning and several opportunities to play in the stream throughout the day, so his new family will need to be able to offer him the active lifestyle he requires. Shiloh does, however, have some significant behavioural needs, and it is very important that his new family fully understands these before applying. He is a sensitive boy who can take time to trust people and initially expects the worst from new situations. He can be particularly worried by men. With patience, kindness and reward-based training, he has been making wonderful progress and is learning that people can be trusted. Shiloh does have a history of biting when frightened, including when startled awake. It’s very important that he must have a quiet, undisturbed place where he can sleep and relax. In his previous home he was not allowed on the sofas or beds. Shiloh can panic if suddenly woken and may react defensively, so his new family will need to be very respectful of his space and understand his communication. He also has a history of guarding high-value items. He is generally very good with his own food and will happily wait for his release command before eating, but he will try to steal human food if given the opportunity and may guard it. His new owners will therefore need to have previous experience of managing dogs with resource guarding and similar behavioural challenges. Shiloh can also be reactive when out on walks. He is muzzle trained and walks well while wearing his muzzle, which is the safest way for him to enjoy his walks. His reactions towards other dogs appear to be largely frustration-related, so this must be taken seriously and managed appropriately. Despite this, Shiloh has been doing so well at the rescue and has recently started having play dates with suitable dogs. He has been an incredibly respectful boy during these interactions, which has been lovely to see! Shiloh does have a high prey drive and will chase livestock, so he must remain on lead and muzzled when out of the home. He can pull on walks, but for an experienced and active family looking for a walking companion, Shiloh could be a wonderful adventure buddy. He can also find formal handling very worrying and is currently working hard on becoming braver when visiting the vets. He is muzzled for veterinary examinations and will need a family who understands that formal handling and veterinary care will need to be approached slowly and carefully. Despite all of his worries, Shiloh is a boy who tries incredibly hard. We are told that in the home he knows the command to go to his bed and is happy to settle there and chill out by himself. More than anything, he loves his people and wants to be close to those he trusts. Shiloh is looking for an adult-only home with no visiting children. His ideal home would be rural and away from busy, urban environments, with a large, very secure garden with 6ft+ fences. His new family will need to be experienced dog owners who have previously lived with dogs with behavioural challenges, ideally with experience of similar breeds too. They must be willing to give Shiloh plenty of time to settle, never rush him and continue the kind, reward-based training that is helping him make such wonderful progress. Shiloh isn't going to be the right dog for everyone, and we appreciate that his requirements are extensive. However, for the right person, we believe there is a really special dog underneath all of those worries. Shiloh has so much love to give, and we would love to find him a home where his people can see the wonderful, goofy, affectionate boy that we see every day.
