Description: Amur has been at the shelter for almost four years now. He’s about six years old, and although we don’t know his full story, there are scars that aren’t visible—and glances that speak volumes on their own. His story makes us think that life hasn’t always been kind to him. Maybe that’s why he needs a little extra time to trust. But when you decide to be patient and let him set the pace, you discover an extraordinary dog. Because once Amur opens his heart to you, he does so forever. He’s an incredibly affectionate dog. At first, he may seem cautious, but once he gets to know you, all he wants is to be by your side. He loves having his tummy scratched and enjoys those petting sessions so much that if you stop, he’ll nudge you gently with his nose, urging you not to stop. With people, he’s respectful and well-behaved—just as he is with children. With other animals, he usually just observes them or ignores them—but he always retains that quiet curiosity that’s so characteristic of him. When a situation becomes overwhelming and he can’t manage it, and we don’t anticipate the situation in advance, he might get triggered. But it’s easy to help him regain his balance. This is a skill he’s already learned, though some days it’s not always easy. On walks, he loves sniffing everything around him; for him, every scent is a new story. He adores discovering nooks and crannies, exploring paths, and sharing long walks together. And when the adventure is over, there’s nothing he enjoys more than a long nap cuddled up next to someone he loves. There’s one moment of the day that always moves us deeply: when we open the door to his kennel to take him out for a walk, happiness simply bursts out of him. He spins around in excitement, but then quickly remembers he needs to stay still so we can put his harness on. He’s learned this because he knows that the sooner he’s ready, the sooner the best part of his day will begin. At the start of the walk, he pulls quite a bit, but the intensity gradually decreases as the walk goes on. Amur has plenty of energy, and living within the walls of a kennel made it hard for him to channel it properly. Yet, once he’s been able to go outside and enjoy the peace and quiet of a home, he’s shown us exactly who he really is. At home, during the first few days, he needs to know where you are. If the place is new to him, he’ll follow you from room to room because loneliness still unsettles him. He’s not a dependent dog out of whim—he’s simply seeking the security he’s been missing for so long. But once he realizes that this place is also his home and that no one is going to disappear, he completely relaxes. That’s when the real Amur emerges: a calm, well-mannered, affectionate, and extremely clean dog. He loves taking naps, knows how to rest comfortably in his own bed, and perfectly understands that the sofa isn’t always meant for him. If at any point he feels anxiety creeping back in, he doesn’t react abruptly—he simply seeks you out. He looks for your presence, your calmness, and your company to feel safe again. He’s a very intelligent dog and learns quickly. His adaptability is truly admirable. New noises might scare him at first, but little by little he normalizes them and gains confidence. With food, he used to show some resource guarding behavior, but during his stays at home with his godmother and godfather, he’s shown us just how much he’s evolved. He respects meal times, doesn’t push, doesn’t become demanding, and even leaves for another room while people eat. These small gestures speak to the tremendous work he’s done—and to his eagerness to keep learning. Although there’s still work to be done in this area. He’s not a destructive dog; he respects household belongings and waits patiently to do his business outside. Thanks to the love and care from volunteers, godmothers, and godfathers, Amur has discovered that humans can also do good. Here, he’s learned what it means to feel loved. And despite everything he’s been through, he still hopes that one day someone will come looking for him. We’d like to think that the next time Amur spins around in excitement won’t be just because he’s heading out for a few-hour walk. We’d like it to be because, finally, someone has come to find him—to never send him back to the kennel again. Amur doesn’t need a perfect family. All he needs is a family that loves him, that has patience during those first few days, and that understands that behind those cautious eyes lies a dog who’s immensely noble, grateful, and full of love. If you believe Amur could be the lifelong companion you’ve been searching for, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
