Dacă nu ar fi crescut într-un refugiu, dacă ar fi fost adoptat ca pui de câine, dacă ar fi crescut într-o casă, dacă ar fi fost socializat corespunzător, dacă ar fi trăit lumea din afara... Dacă, și dacă, și dacă. Atâtea „dacă” în ceea ce privește Berger, încât este greu să gândești la altceva. Dacă toate cele de mai sus s-ar fi întâmplat, Berger ar fi perfect. Cu un pic de efort, antrenament corespunzător, stimulente potrivite și o viață pe care ar trebui s-o aibă un câine în creștere, Berger ar fi prosperat acum. A fost un pui de câine extrem de social și fericit. Îi plăcea să joace cu jucăriile, a învățat foarte repede, dar din păcate a crescut într-un refugiu. Și într-un refugiu, stimulentele sunt limitate. Chiar și cu ceea ce știe, Berger este atât de plăcut, atât de blând și atât de amuzant. Când face cele două sau trei comenzi pe care le știe, plin de entuziasm și bucurie, este frumos, fața lui se lumină complet. Când are frică de lucrurile pe care nu le cunoaște, ne simțim dornici să-i spunem: „Nu te teme, micuțule. Nu tu. Tu, care ești atât de inteligent, atât de puternic, atât de minunat.” Copilul nostru, pentru că încă așa-l vedem, se află între câinele perfect și cel nesocializat. El se echilibrează exact între cele două, iar un moment ne impresionează, următorul ne rănește inima. Este funcțional, nu timoros. Merge la plimbări și le place, atâta timp cât nu există prea mult zgomot sau haos în jurul lui. Îi place contactul cu oamenii, atâta timp cât nu i se impune. Este curios și vrea să facă lucruri, dar nu știe exact cum să înceapă. Berger este foarte inteligent, iar dacă o persoană potrivită îi va da un pic de timp și îl va introduce blând în lumea pe care nu a avut ocazia să o trăiască ca pui de câine, el va deveni un câine foarte bun. Poate avea anumite lipsuri, sau poate nu. Poate are câteva mici ciudățenii, sau poate nu. Dar Berger are atât de multe de oferit, și o minte foarte ascuțită, iar noi credem cu adevărat în el, la fel cum am făcut-o când era pui de câine.

If he hadn’t grown up in a shelter, if he had been adopted as a puppy, if he had grown up in a home, if he had been properly socialized, if he had experienced the world outside… If, and if, and if. So many “ifs” when it comes to Berger, that it’s hard to think of anything else. If all of the above had happened, Berger would be perfect. With a little effort, proper training, the right stimuli, and the kind of life a growing dog should have, Berger would be thriving now. He was an incredibly social and happy puppy. He loved playing with toys, he learned very quickly, but unfortunately, he grew up in a shelter. And in a shelter, stimulation is limited. Even with the little he knows, Berger is so pleasant, so sweet, and so funny. When he does the two or three commands he knows, full of excitement and joy, he’s beautiful, his face just lights up. When he gets scared of the things he doesn’t know, we find ourselves wanting to tell him, “Don’t be afraid, little one. Not you. You, who are so smart, so strong, so wonderful.” Our baby, because that’s still how we see him, is somewhere between the perfect dog and the unsocialized one. He balances right in between, and one moment he impresses us, the next he breaks our hearts. He is functional, not fearful. He goes on walks and enjoys them, as long as there isn’t too much noise or chaos around him. He enjoys human contact, as long as it isn’t forced on him. He is curious and wants to do things, but doesn’t quite know where to begin. Berger is very intelligent, and if the right person gives him some time and gently introduces him to the world he didn’t get to experience as a puppy, he will become a very good dog. He may have some insecurities, or he may not. He may have a few quirks, or he may not. But Berger has so much to give, and a razor-sharp mind, and we truly believe in him, just as we did when he was a puppy.
