Si il n'avait pas grandi en refuge, s'il avait été adopté en tant que chiot, s'il avait grandi dans une maison, s'il avait été bien socialisé, s'il avait expérimenté le monde extérieur... Si, si et si. Tellement de « si » concernant Berger, qu'il est difficile de penser à autre chose. Si tout cela avait eu lieu, Berger serait parfait. Avec un peu d'effort, une formation appropriée, les bons stimuli et la vie qu'un chien en croissance devrait avoir, Berger serait en pleine forme aujourd'hui. Il était un chiot incroyablement sociable et joyeux. Il aimait jouer avec des jouets, il apprenait très vite, mais malheureusement, il a grandi en refuge. Et dans un refuge, les stimulations sont limitées. Même avec ce qu'il sait, Berger est si agréable, si doux et si drôle. Lorsqu'il exécute les deux ou trois ordres qu'il connaît, plein d'enthousiasme et de joie, il est magnifique, son visage s'éclaire complètement. Lorsqu'il a peur des choses qu'il ne connaît pas, nous avons envie de lui dire : « Ne sois pas effrayé, petit. Pas toi. Toi qui es si intelligent, si fort, si merveilleux. » Notre bébé, car c'est toujours ainsi que nous le voyons, se situe entre le chien parfait et le chien non socialisé. Il est juste au milieu, un moment il nous impressionne, l'autre il nous brise le cœur. Il est fonctionnel, pas craintif. Il sort en promenade et y prend plaisir, à condition qu'il n'y ait pas trop de bruit ou de chaos autour de lui. Il apprécie le contact humain, à condition qu'on ne le force pas. Il est curieux et veut faire des choses, mais ne sait pas vraiment par où commencer. Berger est très intelligent, et si la bonne personne lui consacre du temps et le présente doucement au monde qu'il n'a pas pu découvrir en tant que chiot, il deviendra un très bon chien. Il pourrait avoir quelques insécurités, ou peut-être pas. Il pourrait avoir quelques travers, ou peut-être pas. Mais Berger a tellement à offrir, et un esprit très vif, et nous croyons sincèrement en lui, tout comme nous le faisions lorsqu'il était chiot.

If he hadn’t grown up in a shelter, if he had been adopted as a puppy, if he had grown up in a home, if he had been properly socialized, if he had experienced the world outside… If, and if, and if. So many “ifs” when it comes to Berger, that it’s hard to think of anything else. If all of the above had happened, Berger would be perfect. With a little effort, proper training, the right stimuli, and the kind of life a growing dog should have, Berger would be thriving now. He was an incredibly social and happy puppy. He loved playing with toys, he learned very quickly, but unfortunately, he grew up in a shelter. And in a shelter, stimulation is limited. Even with the little he knows, Berger is so pleasant, so sweet, and so funny. When he does the two or three commands he knows, full of excitement and joy, he’s beautiful, his face just lights up. When he gets scared of the things he doesn’t know, we find ourselves wanting to tell him, “Don’t be afraid, little one. Not you. You, who are so smart, so strong, so wonderful.” Our baby, because that’s still how we see him, is somewhere between the perfect dog and the unsocialized one. He balances right in between, and one moment he impresses us, the next he breaks our hearts. He is functional, not fearful. He goes on walks and enjoys them, as long as there isn’t too much noise or chaos around him. He enjoys human contact, as long as it isn’t forced on him. He is curious and wants to do things, but doesn’t quite know where to begin. Berger is very intelligent, and if the right person gives him some time and gently introduces him to the world he didn’t get to experience as a puppy, he will become a very good dog. He may have some insecurities, or he may not. He may have a few quirks, or he may not. But Berger has so much to give, and a razor-sharp mind, and we truly believe in him, just as we did when he was a puppy.
