Adoptă Nala

Collie · Feminin

Traducerea va fi disponibilă în curând.

When Nala came to us she had already had three previous owners by the age of 16 weeks!!! We quickly discovered that, besides having many parasites and great fears, she was also seriously ill. Nala has a hole in her heart, which causes lasting heart problems. Her previous owners were certainly aware of this, and she was simply passed on again and again via eBay. Our colleague Anne took her in as a foster carer to teach her the basics of being a little dog. Nala's diagnostics were already very expensive, and the prognosis was poor. Nala will never be completely healthy again. Naturally there were practically no interested adopters, because Nala needs regular heart ultrasound checks. In addition, she cannot tolerate normal dog food and must be given BARF raw food. Time passed, and there were still no interested adopters for Nala. Nobody wants a chronically ill dog, especially since the increase in veterinary fees. Then Anne and her family realised that Nala was the missing puzzle piece, one they hadn't even known was missing. ❤️ But an animal carer doesn't earn a fortune and couldn't afford such a sick dog... Our board is wonderful and decided that Nala could live with Anne in permanent foster care, so that all costs are covered. Everyone is happy, especially Nala, who has finally found a safe, happy harbour and will never be pushed around again. Her heart condition is closely monitored, and at the moment she is simply cheerful and free of complaints. We would be very happy if Nala could find sponsors so that we can care for her on a lasting basis. Thank you ❤️ UPDATE 10/2024 Over the past year Nala has grown up, learned a great deal, and experienced many adventures with her family. She now even tolerates regular dry food (Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal) and no longer necessarily has to be fed raw. Her heart condition has not worsened, and the hole in her heart has not grown as she has grown. In short: despite her illnesses, Nala is right in the middle of life, enjoys her life to the full, and will remain a part of her family forever. UPDATE 09/2025 Nala has now lived with her family for almost 2 years, and all the major "construction sites" from the beginning now belong to the past. Her heart problem is unchanged; she handles everyday life completely without problems, whether at home, on holiday, or at the animal shelter. However, her health has deteriorated. For many weeks Nala was very tired and listless. At first we blamed the summer temperatures, but eventually it became clear that "there had to be more to it." After several blood tests it became clear that Nala has Addison's disease and Schmidt syndrome. She now needs tablets for life and must have regular check-ups. With the new tablets Nala is once again the crazy clown her family knows and loves. UPDATE 12/25 Nala has had terrible luck and has picked up even more illnesses. The autoimmune disease Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy (SLO) means that Nala keeps losing claws. She is now being treated at the university clinic in Giessen, needs even more tablets, and a strict elimination diet. She receives exclusively Royal Canin Anallergenic dry food and Hermetia Pur from the brand Ofrieda. With the combination of immunotherapy and dietary change, we assume that we will also get this construction site in Nala's life well under control! We would be very grateful for food donations and sponsorships for Nala, as her monthly maintenance costs are quite high... UPDATE 08/26 All in all, the little mouse is doing fairly well. Her heart condition is unchanged, and her thyroid is well regulated. Only the SLO... it costs us a great deal of nerves, time, and a considerable amount of money. We have now been to the university clinic in Giessen 11 times and will probably soon be able to apply for the "Golden Club Membership" 😉 Treating the SLO is proving more difficult than expected. It occurs in flare-ups, the triggers of which are still unknown. Accordingly, we cannot avoid the trigger either, but we were all the more pleased about the "break" from April to July. During that time no claw fell out, and Nala was able to enjoy her life without restrictions. However, Nala has now lost 17 claws (these do regrow, but then fall out again too) and is causing the vets great headaches. All the standard treatment attempts, and with them a lasting good quality of life, have so far failed or Nala has not tolerated the medications. Side effects have ranged from chronic diarrhoea and apathy to aggression and muscle wasting. The vets are poring over books and are in contact with colleagues across half of Europe. Currently Nala is on a therapy that was last used about 20 years ago. But since all the newer medications and treatment plans have not helped her on a lasting basis, this is also worth a try. And so we simply take it day by day, watching how she is doing. We always keep bandaging material on hand and have developed a good eye for which claw will fall out and when we must act and how. Whether we will ever be rid of the SLO is uncertain. At the moment the goal is to make each flare-up as comfortable as possible and to hope that the next one stays away for as long as possible... It was perhaps Nala's great luck that she ended up in the animal shelter a good three years ago, so that her medical care is secured – no matter how long it lasts or how expensive it becomes.
