Adopt Nala

Collie · Unknown

When Nala came to us, she already had three previous owners by the age of 16 weeks!!! Soon we realized that she, aside from having many parasites and large fears, was also severely ill. Nala has a hole in her heart and thus suffers from permanent heart problems. It was likely known to the previous owners and she was repeatedly passed around on eBay. Our colleague Anne took her into foster care to teach her the small dog 1x1. The diagnosis for Nala was already very expensive, and the prognosis was poor. Nala will never be fully healthy again. Of course, there were almost no interested parties because Nala needs to be regularly checked with a heart ultrasound. Additionally, she cannot tolerate normal dog food and must be fed raw food. Time passed, and no one wanted Nala. No one wanted a chronically ill dog, especially since the increase in veterinary fees. Then Anne and her family realized that Nala was the missing piece of the puzzle, even though no one knew that this piece was missing. ❤️ But a dog caregiver doesn't earn the world and couldn't afford to take in such a sick dog... Our board of directors is great and decided that Nala can live in permanent foster care with Anne, and thus all costs are covered. Everyone is happy, especially Nala, who has finally found a safe, happy haven and will never be pushed around again. Her heart defect is closely monitored, and she is currently just happy and without complaints. We would be very happy if Nala could find a sponsor so we can take care of her permanently. Thank you ❤️ UPDATE 10/2024 Nala has grown up in the last year, has learned a lot, and has experienced many adventures with her family. She now tolerates normal dry food (Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal) and no longer needs to be fed raw food. Her heart condition has not worsened, and the hole in her heart has not grown. In short: Despite her illness, Nala is in the middle of life, enjoying it to the fullest, and will always be a part of her family. Update 09/2025 Nala has lived in her family for almost 2 years, and all the major "projects" from the beginning belong to the past. Her heart problem remains unchanged, she "bounces" through everyday life, whether at home, on vacation, or at the animal shelter, without any problems. However, her health has deteriorated. Nala was very tired and weak for many weeks. At first, we attributed this to the summer temperatures, but eventually it was clear "There must be more to it." After some blood tests, it was clear that Nala has Addison's disease and Schmidt syndrome. She now needs lifelong medication and regular check-ups. With the new medication, Nala is back to being the crazy Ulknudel that her family knows and loves. Update 12/25 Nala has had the misfortune to develop even more illnesses. The autoimmune disease Symmetric Lupoid Onychodystrophy (SLO) causes Nala to lose her claws repeatedly. She is now in the University Clinic Giessen for treatment, needs more medication, and an absolute diet. She only receives Royal Canin Anallergenic Dry Food and Ofrieda Hermetia Pur. With the combination of immunotherapy and diet change, we hope to get this "project" in Nala's life under control! We would be very grateful for food donations and sponsorships for Nala, as her monthly expenses are quite high...

About Nala

What life with Nala looks like

Nala is a large adult collie dog waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nala, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nala?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nala on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nala if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nala already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nala isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nala and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
