I am now greeted by a dog with a wagging tail and lately a lick or two. She has from the first day settled overnight sleeping alongside our dogs. Always clean in the house during the day and now night time also. She is very sociable with other dogs and has happily walked past tractors, horses, cars and is not phased when meeting other walkers. Polly knows her name and combined with her love of food it has been easy to practice recall and now introducing whistle recall. She's met my Grandchildren under supervision and been interested but not phased. We've walked daily and stopped off at our local for a coffee where she has met more people and their dogs. Polly has bonded very quickly to our large 6 year old dog, Sophie, but we think she might like the companionship of another dog with a little more energy than Sophie has to give. We know that soon we will see even more of Polly's personality emerge’Lovely Polly was found straying along with another similar dog, but they were never reclaimed and it is most likely that they were simply abandoned. Polly is a sensitive dog who is very shy & will need a lot of time & patience to learn people mean her no harm. It is likely that she may have had some less than kind treatment in her past life, but consistent and loving handling will soon build her confidence.Polly is not used to living with cats or small pets, and given her sighthound genes, would be quite likely to chase them She is good with other dogs. Polly has no long term history so we would not wish to place her with children under 10 years.Because she is so shy - we feel she would be best placed in a home with another kind & confident dog to be her mentor Having been unwanted at such an early age does mean that Polly is likely to have missed out on early training, so her adopters will need to be ready to help her catch up, and training classes will be an essential part of that process as well as normal training in the home, socialising with other kind dogs and habituation to the wider world. She is a normal, healthy and active youngster who will need plenty of exercise and company most of the time.When a dog moves into a new home, they need time and consideration to help them feel confident and settled. They are having to adjust to a totally different environment, with new people and new challenges, and when one adopts a rescue dog, one must be ready to help them through not just the first few days, but for as long as it takes for them to feel comfortable in their new life. They are relying on their new owners to teach them the house rules and all about the new world they are living in. They are likely to need and benefit from dog training classes, and may also need behavioural help and the adopter may need to seek professional advice. If you are considering adopting, please be very sure that you are committed to the needs of your new friend, as they will be relying on you and their life and happiness is literally in your hands.
