Skin Man is an English thoroughbred and shared the fate of hundreds of thousands of racehorses. Already put to work on the track at the age of two and subsequently sent to the slaughterhouse. After developing back issues, he could no longer win and was sold. Countless of these early "sports invalids" end up at the butcher's, often suffering from psychological issues as well due to the track. "Skinny," as he is affectionately called, was fortunate enough to be bought by a compassionate animal rescuer, but she placed him with three cold-blooded horses that were somewhat racially prejudiced and bullied Skinny whenever they could. Skinny didn't get enough food and became emaciated. Eventually, the animal rescuer realized that things couldn't continue like this and sought a buyer for Skinny. A young woman, very experienced with horses for her age, stepped forward and took Skinny in from Heinsberg, Aachen, where she lived with her boyfriend on a farm. There, Skinny's life improved significantly. The young woman then found a riding horse for Skinny, and Schutzengel für Tiere, the animal rescue, introduced her to our Cornel. Cornel and Skinny became fast friends. Unfortunately, dark clouds then gathered in the lives of Cornel and Skinny, as the young woman broke up with her boyfriend and had to find a new place to live for herself and the horses. It seemed to work out at first, as she found an apprenticeship as a horse handler and could also house the horses on this farm. Schutzengel für Tiere helped her with Cornel's stable rent. Over time, however, we realized that the young woman was struggling to manage her own life, and she left the farm again, ending up in financial distress. In the fall of 2013, she asked us to take back Cornel and also find a solution for her own horse. Since Cornel is extremely attached to Skinny, we couldn't bear to let Skinny face his fate alone and took him in. The young woman later regretted asking for help and announced that she wanted Skinny back in the spring (practically saving the costs of expensive installation for the animal welfare society). But Skinny was fortunate once again— we were able to contact the previous owner, who informed us that she had sold Skinny under a title retention agreement and still hadn't received the full purchase price! We negotiated a new purchase contract, and Skinny now belongs to us. Since he spends his time in a box going round and round, he will spend the rest of his life together with his companion Cornel in the beautiful open stable at Gut Pottdeckel in Rheinberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. For the first time in his life, Skinny can no longer see his ribs, he is round and visibly content. To his good fortune, Skinny now only needs sponsors to secure his life. For Skinny, who is only eleven years old, the full pension costs amount to 190 EUR per month.

Skin Man ist ein englisches Vollblut und teilte das Schicksal Hunderttausender von Galopprennpferden. Bereits im Alter von zwei Jahren auf der Rennbahn eingesetzt und verheizt. Nachdem er Probleme mit seinem Rücken bekam, konnte er nicht mehr gewinnen und wurde verkauft. Unzählige dieser frühen "Sportinvaliden" landen, da sie häufig auch psychisch einen Knacks auf der Rennbahn bekommen haben, beim Metzger. "Skinny", wie er liebevoll genannt wird, hatte Glück und wurde von einer mitleidigen Tierschützerin gekauft - sie stellte ihn allerdings zu drei Kaltblütern, die etwas rassistisch veranlagt sind und Skinny mobbten, wo sie nur konnten. Er bekam nicht genügend Futter ab und wurde rappeldürr. Schließlich erkannte die Tierschützerin, dass es so nicht weitergehen konnte und suchte einen Käufer für Skinny. Eine junge, für ihr Alter sehr pferdeerfahrene Frau, meldete sich und übernahm Skinny nach Heinsberg bei Aachen, wo sie mit ihrem Freund auf einem Hof lebte. Dort ging es Skinny dann erst einmal deutlich besser. Die junge Frau suchte dann ein Bestellpferd für Skinny, das Schutzengel für Tiere ihr vermittelte, unseren Cornel. Cornel und Skinny waren schnell ein Herz und eine Seele. Leider zogen dann aber dunkle Wolken im Leben von Cornel und Skinny auf, die junge Frau trennte sich nämlich von ihrem Freund und musste fortan für sich und die Pferde eine neue Bleibe suchen. Das schien erst auch zu klappen, da sie einen Ausbildungsplatz zur Pferdepflegerin gefunden hatte und die Pferde auch auf diesem Hof unterbringen konnte. Schutzengel für Tiere unterstützte sie bei Cornels Stallmiete.Im Laufe der Zeit mussten wir aber feststellen, dass die junge Frau leider ihr Leben selbst nicht so ganz im Griff hatte, sie verließ diesen Hof wieder und war anschließend in finanzieller Not. Im Herbst 2013 bat sie uns, Cornel zurückzunehmen und auch für ihr eigenes Pferd eine Lösung zu suchen. Da Cornel extrem an Skinny hängt, brachten wir es nicht übers Herz, Skinny seinem Schicksal zu überlassen und nahmen ihn mit. Die junge Frau wollte leider dann später nichts mehr davon wissen, dass sie uns um Hilfe gebeten hatte und kündigte an, Skinny im Frühjahr wieder haben zu wollen (praktisch so was, sich im Winter die Kosten für das teuere Einstallen zu sparen, auf Kosten des Tierschutzvereins).Aber noch einmal hatte Skinny Glück - wir konnten Kontakt mit der Vorbesitzerin aufnehmen, die uns mitteilte, dass sie Skinny damals unter Eigentumsvorbehalt verkauft hatte und den Kaufpreis noch gar nicht vollständig erhalten hatte! Wir schlossen mit ihr einen neuen Kaufvertrag und Skinny gehört nun zu seinem Glück uns.Da er in einer Box völlig am Rad dreht, soll er den Rest seines Lebens zusammen mit seinem Gefährten Cornel in der schönen Offenstallanlage hier auf Gut Pottdeckel in Rheinberg am Niederrhein verbringen. Zum wahrscheinlich ersten Mal in seinem Leben sieht man bei Skinny die Rippen nicht mehr, er ist kugelrund und sichtlich zufrieden. Zu seinem Glück fehlen ihm nun nur noch Paten, die sein Leben absichern. Denn Skinny ist erst elf Jahre alt und die reinen Pensionskosten pro Pferd belaufen sich monatlich auf 190,- EUR.
