Some are searching for busy family life, long sofa cuddles and endless adventures. Santiago is searching for understanding. A magnificent Maremma x St Bernard cross, Santiago has had an incredibly difficult start to life. Before arriving in rescue he experienced cruelty that left him wary of people and slow to trust. While his past doesn't define him, it has shaped the dog he is today. The wonderful news is that Santiago has already made enormous progress in foster care. With patience, consistency and calm handling, his foster carer has watched him grow in confidence, build trusting relationships and begin to enjoy life. It has been a gradual journey, and one that proves just how much potential this remarkable boy has. Santiago forms genuine bonds with the people he knows and trusts. He enjoys quiet companionship and affection on his own terms and responds best to people who allow him space, choice and time rather than expecting too much too soon. Out and about, he is a pleasure to walk. He enjoys exploring, walks beautifully on lead and has even become a regular visitor to the local pub with his foster family, calmly taking in the world around him. One of Santiago's greatest joys is being outdoors. Like many livestock guardian breeds, he is happiest when he has space to observe the world around him. His ideal home would offer a large, securely enclosed garden or land where he can spend much of the day outdoors, coming inside to rest with his family in the evenings. He is not a dog who needs constant entertainment. He simply enjoys having space, routine and people he can trust. Because of his guardian breed instincts, Santiago is also exceptionally agile. Despite his size, he can climb and escape where many people would least expect it, so exceptionally secure fencing is essential. Santiago will only be rehomed to experienced owners who understand large breeds and are prepared to continue the careful management that has helped him make such positive progress. He is not suitable for homes with children and would be happiest in a calm, predictable environment. Santiago is best homed as the only dog. He meets other dogs on walks and shows no reactivity, but we think he would be best placed as the only dog in the home. Like many dogs who have experienced trauma, Santiago has very clear boundaries. He needs owners who understand that trust is earned, who respect his personal space and who are committed to following behaviour guidance. He thrives when life is calm, consistent and free from unnecessary pressure. This is not a dog who should ever be physically challenged or expected to cope with busy, unpredictable environments. Instead, he needs thoughtful management, confident handling and people who appreciate that successful rehabilitation is built on patience rather than force. Santiago is due to continue his journey with the support of a behaviourist, and Rescue Me Dogs UK will remain available to support his future family. We are happy to consider applications for foster, foster with a view to adopt or adoption, depending on the circumstances and experience of the applicant. Santiago won't be the right dog for most homes. But somewhere there is someone who understands dogs like him. Someone who won't measure success by instant affection, but by quiet milestones. Someone who knows that earning the trust of a dog who has had every reason to fear the world is one of life's greatest privileges. For that person, Santiago has so much to offer. Breed Insight: Maremma x St Bernard Santiago is believed to be a cross between a Maremma Sheepdog and a St Bernard. Maremmas are independent livestock guardian dogs, bred to think for themselves and make their own decisions. They are naturally loyal to the people they trust but are rarely overly demonstrative with strangers. Combined with the calm, steady nature of the St Bernard, Santiago is a dog who values routine, enjoys outdoor living and forms deep bonds once he feels safe. He is best suited to experienced owners who appreciate guardian breeds and understand that respect and trust go hand in hand. Due to Santiago's specific behavioural and management needs, all applications will be subject to an enhanced home checking and matching process. We will discuss his full history openly with suitable applicants to ensure the very best match for both Santiago and his future family.
