He's looking for someone exceptional. Could you be his needle in a haystack? Believed to be a Maremma x St Bernard, Santi had a difficult start to life, surviving alone on the streets of southern Italy where he was regularly chased away and had stones thrown at him before eventually being rescued by one of our volunteers. Today, he is safe in foster care in Northumberland, where we've been able to understand him much better. Santi is a dog who enjoys the simple things in life. He loves his walks, walks calmly around other dogs and enjoys spending time outdoors. He forms close bonds with people he trusts and thrives in calm, predictable surroundings. He would happily spend much of his day relaxing in a large, secure outdoor space before coming indoors to sleep at night, making him well suited to a rural lifestyle. Suitable Home We're looking for an experienced, adult-only home that understands some dogs need thoughtful management as well as love. Santi will need: โœ” A quiet rural or semi-rural home. โœ” To be the only pet. โœ” Large, secure outdoor space. โœ” Someone experienced with guardian breeds or complex canine behaviour. โœ” Calm, predictable routines . Although Santi enjoys being around people he trusts, he is not suited to busy households with frequent visitors or lots of daily activity. Important Information Finding the right home for Santi is far more important than finding the quickest one. While Santi has made genuine progress in foster care, he has also demonstrated complex behavioural challenges within the home. These include resource guarding and aggressive responses in certain situations, which means he requires careful management. Because of this, we are looking for someone with previous experience of behaviourally complex dogs who understands that management, routine and respecting boundaries will form part of Santi's life. His behaviour does not define him, but it does mean he needs an exceptional home where his needs are fully understood. Breed Insights Maremmas were bred to live outdoors protecting livestock, making independent decisions and constantly assessing their surroundings. Combined with the gentle strength of the St Bernard, Santi is an intelligent, observant dog who values space, routine and trust. He is unlikely to enjoy a busy suburban lifestyle but could thrive with someone who appreciates the unique qualities of guardian breeds. Could You Help Santi? We know Santi's perfect home won't be easy to find. That's why we're happy to consider foster , foster with a view to adopt , or adoption for the right person. You'll also have the full support of Rescue Me Dogs UK throughout the process. We won't expect you to navigate Santi's journey alone, and we'll be on hand to offer advice and guidance every step of the way. If you have the experience, environment and understanding to offer this remarkable dog the peaceful future he deserves, we'd love to hear from you.

About Santiago

What life with Santiago looks like

Santiago is a extra-large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rescue Me Dogs in United Kingdom.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible โ€” a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" โ€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures โ€” to let them settle.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งAdopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Santiago, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Santiago?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rescue Me Dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly โ€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Santiago on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Santiago if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad โ€” Rescue Me Dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra โ‚ฌ100โ€“โ‚ฌ350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Santiago already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported โ€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Santiago isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work โ€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rescue Me Dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Santiago and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect โ€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
