If we did not assign a name to the dog, we would have to call it by a number (its microchip): the first function of a name is therefore related to its subjective identification, which also helps in communication and relationship, as the dog will tend to pay attention to whoever says its name. There are thousands of names in the world, and the Australian insurance company Budget Direct, together with the content marketing agency NeoMam Studios, has taken the initiative to look for the most popular ones in each country. Today we focus on female names, which top the rankings with Luna or Bella, the most popular female dog names in 30 countries. Luna is at the top of the list in 16 countries and Bella (or Bela) in 14. Luna and Bella are both Spanish and Italian words meaning moon and pretty/beautiful. However, these names are also popular in non-Latin countries, including Finland and the Netherlands, where it seems that a taste for Mediterranean names has been established among dog lovers. At third place in this ranking we find the name Lola, fourth Molly, followed by Lucy, Kira, Daisy, Mia, Nala, and Nina. As for Italy, the most used name is Mia. Some of the more interesting names are those that appear only in one country. For example, the most popular name in Brazil is Mel, which is not an abbreviation of Melanie but the Portuguese equivalent of Honey. It is clear that when choosing a dog's name, what matters most is that it appeals to us: but we should never forget that it is absolutely appropriate - and respectful towards the animal - for it to also reflect the dog's personality.

Se non assegnassimo un nome al cane dovremmo per forza chiamarlo con un numero (il suo microchip): la prima funzione del nome è dunque quella legata alla sua identificazione soggettiva, che aiuta però anche nella comunicazione e nella relazione, dato che il cane sarà portato a prestare attenzione a chi pronuncia il suo nome. Ci sono migliaia di nomi nel mondo e la compagnia di assicurazione australiana Budget Direct, insieme all'agenzia di content marketing NeoMam Studios, si è premunita di cercare quelli più popolari in ogni paese. Oggi ci occupiamo di quelli femminili, la cui graduatoria vede all’apice Luna o Bella, che sono i nomi di cane femmina più popolari in ben 30 paesi. Luna è in cima alla classifica in 16 paesi e Bella (o Bela) in 14. Luna e Bella sono entrambe parole spagnole e italiane, che significano luna e carina/bella. Ma questi nomi sono popolari anche in paesi non latini, tra cui Finlandia e Paesi Bassi, dove dunque sembra essersi affermato un gusto per i nomi mediterranei tra gli amanti dei cani. Al terzo posto di questa classifica troviamo il nome Lola, al quarto Molly e a seguire: Lucy, Kira, Daisy, Mia, Nala e Nina. Quanto all'Italia, il nome più utilizzato è Mia. Alcuni dei nomi più interessanti sono però quelli “unici” che si ritrovano in un solo paese. Per esempio, il nome più popolare in Brasile è Mel, che non è l'abbreviazione di Melanie ma l’equivalente in portoghese di Honey. E’ chiaro che nella scelta del nome del cane conta soprattutto il fatto che ci piaccia: ma non dovremmo mai dimenticare che è assolutamente opportuno – e rispettoso per l'animale – che sia un nome che rispecchia anche la personalità del cane.
