Adottare Bryn

Cocker Spaniel · Maschio · Adulto · 5 anni

Sometimes, the dogs who need the most understanding have the most love to give. Meet Bryn. Meet Bryn, a gorgeous five-year-old Cocker Spaniel with a sensitive nature, a wonderfully affectionate side and an enormous amount of love to give.Bryn is one of those dogs who needs a little time to show you just how special he really is. He’s not the sort of spaniel who will rush up to every stranger demanding attention. New people and unfamiliar situations can make him anxious, and he needs the reassurance of knowing that nobody is going to rush or overwhelm him.But give Bryn the time and understanding he needs, and something rather lovely happens.Behind that worried exterior is an incredibly sweet, cuddly boy who absolutely adores the people he trusts. And thanks to the patience and dedication of his foster family, we’re now seeing just how much Bryn has to offer. Bryn arrived in foster care on 22 August, and the progress he’s made has been wonderful. When he first arrived, he was so unsure of his new surroundings and the people in them that he wasn’t comfortable being touched.Fast-forward eight weeks, and Bryn is a very different boy with the people he knows and trusts. He now actively seeks out affection, happily climbs onto his foster mum’s lap and absolutely loves a proper cuddle. His foster mum describes him as a real softie who simply wants to be loved. And isn’t that what every dog deserves?Bryn is happiest when he’s surrounded by familiar people, able to relax and enjoy their company without feeling pressured. Once he knows you, he’s affectionate, comfortable with handling and very happy to be close. He’s also learning that the world doesn’t have to be quite such a frightening place. His confidence has improved enormously during his time in foster care, and although he still has anxieties to work through, his progress shows just how much he can benefit from patience, consistency and gentle encouragement. There’s much more to Bryn than his nervousness, and his foster family have discovered some lovely little quirks. For starters, he absolutely loves his chew toys, particularly his current favourite — an avocado! He’s also a big fan of enrichment activities, including Kongs and lick mats, which help keep his busy spaniel brain occupied.A game of fetch isn’t really Bryn’s thing, but give him something interesting to chew or a tasty enrichment activity and he’s a happy boy. He’s particularly fond of pâté, yoghurt and a good treat, which is very useful when it comes to rewarding his calmer moments.Bryn is fully housetrained and will wait by the back door when he needs to go outside. He settles nicely indoors, sleeps through the night and is quite happy sharing his foster family’s bedroom — although we’ve been warned that he snores rather loudly! He’s also a clever boy who already understands several commands, including sit, stay, down, come, leave it, bed and paw.Like many spaniels, he can be easily distracted, particularly when something exciting catches his attention, but he’s food-motivated and has responded well to gentle, positive training.Bryn travels happily in the car, is comfortable wearing his collar and harness, and has done well with grooming and veterinary handling once given the right approach. In fact, despite being nervous when he first met his groomer, he settled and behaved beautifully throughout his appointment. These are all lovely qualities that his future family can build upon. If there’s one thing guaranteed to get Bryn excited, it’s the prospect of going for a walk.He knows when walkies are due and isn’t shy about reminding his foster family, sometimes with a rather determined stare and a little whine!Bryn currently enjoys around one to two hours of exercise a day, with his foster carer recommending two walks of approximately 30–45 minutes each.He loves getting out, exploring and having a good sniff, and his foster family have also hired secure private fields so he can enjoy a proper run around safely. However, Bryn does have a strong prey drive and is particularly interested in squirrels and birds. He can pull strongly on the lead, and his recall is not yet reliable. For this reason, Bryn must remain on a lead in unenclosed areas, with off-lead exercise restricted to securely enclosed spaces while his training continues.Everyday outdoor activity such as traffic, cyclists, joggers and general noises doesn’t seem to bother him. He’s generally happy to walk past strangers, provided they don’t approach or try to touch him.He can be uncertain around other dogs, particularly those who are very playful or invade his space. Calm interactions, where Bryn is allowed to decide whether he wants to engage, tend to go much better.Bryn will need an adopter who enjoys walking and understands that physical exercise, mental stimulation and ongoing training are all important parts of keeping him happy. Now, we need to talk about something very important.Bryn is a VERY vocal boy!And we really do mean very vocal!Bryn’s barking is one of the main things his future family will need to understand and be prepared for.He can bark persistently at unfamiliar people, particularly visitors entering his home. He may continue barking even while wagging his tail, and although he can settle once visitors sit down, he may start again when they stand up.He also reacts to certain sounds and activity outside, such as car doors closing, vehicles passing or people walking past the window. His barking may be connected to his anxiety and uncertainty, although we cannot know the cause of every episode. The encouraging news is that his foster family have already seen improvements.By rewarding calm behaviour, giving him space and helping him feel secure, they’ve noticed that he is becoming less reactive to some outside noises. But we must be clear: Bryn still barks a great deal, and there is no guarantee that this will disappear. We are therefore looking for a quiet home, ideally in a rural location or peaceful village, where there is little passing activity and where his barking is unlikely to cause problems with close neighbours.A busy housing estate, a home overlooking a busy pavement or somewhere with frequent visitors would not be suitable.Bryn needs someone who can accept his vocal nature while continuing to help him build confidence through patient, positive training. He may always have quite a lot to say for himself, and that’s something his new family must be comfortable with. Another area where Bryn has made encouraging progress is being left at home.Initially, he struggled when his foster carers went out and could bark or howl when left. However, as he’s become familiar with their routine and learned that they return, his foster family have seen a real improvement. He’s now managed periods of up to six hours alone, and more recently has been observed settling quietly by the front door rather than barking throughout. That’s a significant step forward for a dog who can find change so unsettling. His foster carer feels that Bryn could live with someone who works outside the home, provided he has a consistent routine, sufficient exercise, enrichment and the right support. However, because of his anxieties, we would particularly welcome a home where someone is around for a good part of the day, especially during his initial settling-in period. His new family must be prepared to build up any time alone gradually rather than expecting him to cope immediately in a new environment. Bryn has some endearing habits, but also a few that will need a watchful eye! He’s rather partial to collecting shoes, chewing slippers and helping himself to tissues or cardboard toilet-roll tubes if they’re left within reach. He has also been known to chew or swallow pieces of toys, so his future family will need to choose suitable enrichment items carefully and supervise him with anything he might destroy or ingest.Bryn can sometimes jump up, whine when he wants something and hump blankets or cushions. His foster fami
