La vista è un senso che raggiunge il suo livello ottimale anatomico e funzionale solo a 4 mesi di età. A questa età, la vista del cucciolo è appannata e se si inizia con il pre-addestramento prima di questa età, dà al cucciolo la possibilità di vedere la palla o il panno ripetendo il movimento stimolante. In nessun caso correggere un cucciolo o un cane adulto per una notifica tardiva o nemmeno per non vedere un oggetto in movimento. Per comprendere come il cane vede, bisogna sapere che le cellule recettoriali nella retina sono di due tipi: bastoncelli e coni. I bastoncelli registrano i bassi livelli di luce in bianco e nero e sono necessari per la visione notturna. Dilatando la pupilla, l'occhio permette alla luce di raggiungere meglio la retina. Si è così scoperto che un cane vede bene quando la luce è debole, ma non vede affatto quando c'è oscurità profonda. Gli altri recettori, chiamati coni, sono necessari per la visione colorata e della luce. Fino a poco tempo fa, si credeva che la vista del cane fosse limitata al nero e bianco e ai toni grigi. Ma esperimenti recenti hanno rivelato che l'occhio del cane può distinguere diversi colori. Il fatto che gli occhi del cane brillino nei fari delle auto è dovuto al strato opaco, chiamato tapetum lucidum, dietro le cellule recettoriali riflettenti. I cani hanno una visione binoculare e una profondità di campo visivo poco profonda. La messa a fuoco di un'immagine è più efficiente nei cani con gli occhi disposti frontalmente rispetto a quelli con gli occhi disposti lateralmente. Estremamente sensibili ai cambiamenti più impercettibili nell'ambiente e con una visione periferica eccezionale, i cani sono efficaci nel leggere visivamente il territorio e persino gli stati emotivi degli umani. L'accuratezza della vista del cane è sufficiente per ricostruire le 625 righe per cornice di una trasmissione televisiva europea. In altre parole, i cani in Europa possono guardare un programma televisivo senza problemi, mentre quelli negli Stati Uniti, dove viene trasmesso con solo 525 righe per cornice, vedono solo punti e linee in movimento.

Extremely keen on the most imperceptible changes in the environment and with exceptional peripheral vision, dogs are effective at visually reading territory and even the emotional states of humans. The accuracy of the dog's vision is sufficient to reconstruct the 625 lines per frame of a European standard TV broadcast. In other words, dogs in Europe can watch a TV programme without any problems, whereas those in the US, where it is broadcast with only 525 lines per frame, see only dots and moving lines.
