You think you see a golden eye watching you from the shelter of shadows – but, then again, you might be mistaken. Like the parable of The Three Blind Men and the Elephant, you aren’t sure whether – or how – these various elements cohere into a single organism. It’s only when you leave your own hand hanging there like a Christmas bauble that you see her in her entirety. For she is drawn to the hand and must, it seems, slide from out of her hiding space to brush herself against it. Affection is the one thing that brings this naturally cautious cat out of her timidity. She lives for it. Hand grazing over her head and between her ears, hand along her back and lifted over her rump, hand tracing the line of her tail. All of a sudden, ears and paws and tails and eyes are brought together. Not as separate parts but as one whole cat – and she is beautiful. And gentle and tender and sweet. Mia is not merely anything at all, she’s everything, the whole package, ready to make the right home very happy indeed.
