Rupert is een grote gouden labrador van ongeveer acht jaar oud. Rupert is onlangs bij ons in de zorg gekomen vanaf het Botosani openbare dierenasiel in Roemenië. Hij was daar al een tijdje met zijn drie volwassen zonen, die er nog steeds zijn. Rupert is een vastberaden oude geit die waarschijnlijk een vrij wisselende levensloop had voordat hij in het asiel kwam, gewend om te gaan waar en wanneer hij wilde. Hij vond leidingstraining een lastig proces en heeft pas nu (met name) geaccepteerd dat hij nu waar de mensente bepaalt moet gaan. Echter, hij doet momenteel alleen korte wandelingen, omdat als hij zich moedig voelt en het tijd is om te liggen, er niet veel is wat hem anders kan overtuigen. Bij aankomst in zijn Britse tijdelijke huis spendeerde hij de eerste halfdag erin om alle grenzen te testen of er een uitweg was, wanneer hij in nieuwe situaties wordt geplaatst, herhaalt hij dit gewoonlijk opnieuw. Pas als hij zichzelf heeft bewezen dat hij geen superhond is en niet meer kan springen over vijf voet hoge hekken met zijn oude botten, geeft hij een grote zucht en gaat hij een patroon aan nemen waarin hij meestal de dag door slaapt. Hij is gelukkig met zijn lot, maar moet eerst zien of er iets beters aan de andere kant van dat hek is. Het is geen proces dat lang duurt, maar het lijkt een ritueel te zijn dat te verwachten is wanneer hij verhuist. Rupert woont gelukkig met andere honden, maar is er relatief onbewust van. Hij zou net zo gelukkig zijn als de enige hond en heeft gelukkig met de kat samengewoond, en zelfs zijn snoepjes met hem gedeeld. Ondanks het uiterlijk van een zachte, passieve oude labrador zocht Rupert op dit moment niet naar aandacht of wees deze niet op prijs, ook al toont hij het wel en lijkt hij er niet ongerust of bang door te zijn. Ik denk dat als hij zo ver in zijn leven is gekomen zonder liefde en vriendelijkheid van mensen, het idee van knuffelen nog steeds een raadsel voor hem is. Hij zal zeker niet langzaam bij je voeten liggen of je je slippers brengen binnenkort, maar wie weet met genoeg behandeling en koekjes? Rupert wil een gezin met volwassenen zonder veel activiteit voor zijn pensioenjaren. Rupert werd tijdelijk ondergebracht in Norwich Norfolk. Als je geïnteresseerd bent, stuur dan bericht of bel tussen 9:00 en 17:00 uur maandag tot vrijdag of tussen 9:00 en 16:00 uur zaterdag. Adoptiebijdrage vanaf 1 december 2025 zijn Puppies al gesteriliseerd en alle volwassen honden: £430. Ongesteriliseerde puppies op een sterilisatie-overeenkomst: £530 (Je krijgt een terugbetaling van £100 zodra je ons bewijs van sterilisatie stuurt). Oudere honden (10+ jaar): £150–£250 (afhankelijk van leeftijd en individuele behoeften). Adoptiebeleid Wanneer je een hond van Safe Rescue adopteert, MOET je een slip-lead gebruiken. Dit houdt je hond veilig: je nieuwe hond zal nerveus zijn en je niet vertrouwen, en je weet niet welke situaties je hond kunnen storen. Als je hond in paniek raakt, is de slip-lead de enige manier om te voorkomen dat hij ontsnapt (veel honden kunnen ontsnappen uit een halsband en/of riem). Het zal MINSTENS 3-6 maanden duren voordat je hond zich heeft ingevoegd en jij je hond volledig kent (langer voor nervieuze honden). De slip-lead moet DUREND deze periode altijd gebruikt worden. Zelfs naast je hond zich heeft ingevoegd, is het veiliger om de slip-lead te gebruiken in situaties waarin je hond misschien bang wordt (bijvoorbeeld bij bezoeken aan nieuwe plekken, rond onbekende mensen, bij de dierenarts), en in situaties waar onverwachte triggers kunnen optreden (bijvoorbeeld rond vuurwerk). Nervieuze honden kunnen altijd een slip-lead moeten dragen als back-up veiligheidsmaatregel. De slip-lead is een veiligheidsapparaat en mag NOOIT gebruikt worden als trainingstool. Het gebruik van de riem om druk uit te oefenen op de nek van de hond is schadelijk. Als je hond aan de riem trekt, kunnen wij je adviseren over trainingstechnieken die schade vermijden. Zodra je hond zich heeft ingevoegd, kun je overwegen om een riem (tezamen met de slip-lead) te gebruiken, mits de hond comfortabel is met het dragen ervan. De meeste riemen zijn niet ontsnappingsbestendig, maar riemen met een band achter de ribben (zoals Ruffwear Webmaster of Perfect Fit Harnesses) zijn veiliger. Retractabele / uitbreidbare leidingen mogen nooit gebruikt worden op onze honden. Geadopteerde honden moeten opgehaald worden van het dierenasiel en direct thuis gebracht worden in een kooi. Heuvels en poorten moeten minimaal 1,5 meter hoog en veilig zijn. Alle honden zijn gevaccineerd, gechipst en gesteriliseerd (tenzij de hond te jong is om te laten steriliseren). Rupert is a large golden labrador aged around eight years old. Rupert has come into our care recently from the Botosani public shelter in Romania. He had been in there for some time along with his three adult sons who are still there. Rupert is a determined old goat who has probably led a pretty transient life prior to the shelter, used to going as and where he pleases. He found lead training rather a trial and has only now (mostly) accepted that he has to go where the humans direct now. However he is only going on short walks currently because when he decides he is tired and it’s time to lie down there’s not an awful lot that can be done to persuade him otherwise . On arrival in his UK foster home he spent the first half day just testing all boundaries to see if there was a way out, when placed in new situations this is a habit that he repeats. Only when he has proven to himself that he is not super dog and cannot jump five foot fences with his aging bones will he give a big sigh and settle into a pattern of pretty much snoozing most of the day. He is content with his lot but has to just see first if there’s better on the other side of that fence. It’s not a process that lasts long but seems to be a ritual that can be expected when he’s moved. Rupert is living happily with other dogs but is quite oblivious to them. He’d be just as happy as the only dog and has been cohabiting happily with the cat and even shares his treats with him. Despite giving the appearance of a soppy, docile old lab Rupert is not currently approaching for fuss or appreciative of it, although he will allow it and seems neither distressed or scared by it. I guess if he’s lived this far in his life without the love and kindness of humans the concept of a cuddle is still an enigma to him. He certainly won’t be lying devotedly by your feet or bringing you your slippers anytime soon, but in time and with enough treat bribery who knows?!? This will keep your dog safe: your new dog will be nervous and will not trust you, and you will not know which situations might upset your dog. If your dog panics, then a slip lead is the only way to prevent your dog from escaping (many dogs can escape from a collar and/or harness). It will take AT LEAST 3-6 months for your dog to settle-in and for you to know your dog fully (longer for nervous dogs). The slip lead must ALWAYS be used during this settling-in period. Even after your dog is settled, it is safest to use the slip lead in situations where your dog may become scared (e.g. visiting new places, around unfamiliar people, at the vet), and it situations where unexpected triggers might happen (e.g. around bonfire night). Nervous dogs may always need to wear a slip-lead as a back-up safety measure. The slip lead is a safety device and must NEVER be used as a training tool. Using the lead to apply pressure to the dog’s neck is damaging. If your dog pulls on the lead, then we can advise you on training methods that avoid harm. Once your dog is settled, you may want to consider using a harness (together with the slip lead) if your dog is comfortable with being handled when it is fitted. Most harnesses are not escape-proof, but harnesses with a strap behind the ribcage (e.g. Ruffwear Webmaster or Perfect Fit Harnesses) are safer.
