Adoptar a Anja

Anja is still a puppy, but she is already becoming a very large one. She has livestock guardian ancestry, and this is important information for anyone considering adopting her. These breeds were developed to think independently, assess their surroundings, protect territory and those they consider part of their group, and make decisions without constantly looking to a human for instructions. Those characteristics can make them incredibly devoted dogs, but they also mean that Anja needs a home that understands she will grow into much more than an oversized puppy. When Anja first arrived in foster care, fear was one of her most noticeable characteristics. She was extremely cautious and unsure of unfamiliar people and situations. Sudden movements and unexpected things could frighten her, and there have been moments when her foster carer has jokingly described her as being frightened of her own shadow. Rather than pushing her into interaction, her foster carer initially ignored her and allowed Anja to make the decision about when it was safe to approach. That approach worked beautifully. Once Anja had observed her new carer and decided she was safe, the relationship changed enormously. She became affectionate and comfortable around her, showing just how much personality is hidden underneath that initial caution. She is currently more cautious around men. Before entering foster care, Anja had primarily been cared for by women at the boarding kennels, so men are simply less familiar to her. This is something her future family should continue working on gradually through calm and positive experiences, without forcing interactions when she is uncomfortable. As Anja has settled, her playful puppy personality has also started appearing. She loves running around the garden and wants to play, but she has a surprisingly good ability to settle afterwards. She seems equally happy having an energetic period outside or simply relaxing when there is nothing happening. Anja is also good with other dogs and currently lives successfully alongside another dog in her foster home. Having that everyday experience means she is already accustomed to sharing her home environment with canine company. She has also met dogs while out walking and has behaved well around them. A future home with another suitable dog could therefore be considered for Anja. As with any new pairing, introductions should still be handled properly and the individual personalities of both dogs taken into account. Her confidence outside the home is developing too. Initially, getting Anja out for a proper walk was a significant challenge. With time and encouragement, she began venturing further and discovered that she actually enjoys walking. More recently, she managed a long walk through a country park where she encountered both people and dogs and behaved very well. She walked nicely throughout the outing and coped successfully with everything she encountered. She was less enthusiastic about getting back into the van afterwards, but with some encouragement this was managed too. These experiences are important for Anja. She is still nervous about sudden or unfamiliar things, so continued exposure to normal life should be gradual, positive, and carefully managed. The aim should not be to overwhelm her with as many experiences as possible, but to help her develop confidence through successful ones. Her toilet habits in foster care are also progressing very well. She has been going outside appropriately, including heading straight outside in the morning without problems. There are, however, aspects of Anja’s behaviour that her future adopter must take seriously. Anja has shown food guarding on one occasion after stealing some toast. While this was related specifically to possession of food, it is something that should be managed responsibly rather than tested or challenged. Her future family should use positive training and sensible management around valuable food and resources. She is also beginning to display some of the territorial awareness expected from a dog with livestock guardian ancestry. Her foster carer has noticed that Anja can view her home and family as something she should protect. Although she is currently behaving beautifully with the people she knows and trusts, her guardian instincts mean that introductions to unfamiliar visitors will need to be managed carefully. As she matures, those instincts may become more pronounced. Her future adopter therefore needs to be comfortable setting appropriate boundaries and managing visitors rather than assuming that extensive socialisation will turn her into a dog who automatically welcomes every stranger onto her property. At the same time, Anja should not be viewed solely through the lens of those guardian characteristics. At present she is still a cautious puppy who can be frightened by unexpected things, loves to play in the garden, enjoys a good walk once she gets going, lives happily with another dog, and forms strong relationships when she has been given enough time to decide that someone is safe. That combination of caution and natural guarding instinct means Anja needs thoughtful handling. Confidence should be developed without encouraging her to feel responsible for making every decision about who or what represents a threat. A suitable adopter should understand large guardian type dogs or be prepared to learn about their needs. Positive training, careful socialisation, appropriate management of resources, secure boundaries, controlled introductions to visitors, regular exercise, and mental stimulation will all be important as Anja develops. Her size also needs to be considered. Anja is already becoming a very large puppy and will need a home prepared practically for a powerful adult dog. Training should continue now while she is young, particularly lead manners, handling, settling, recall foundations, and responding to her carers around distractions. Anja has already made significant progress in foster care. The puppy who initially approached the world with enormous suspicion is now playing, running around the garden, enjoying affection from trusted people, toileting outside, living successfully with another dog, going on proper walks, and calmly encountering people and dogs in public. She still has plenty of growing and learning ahead of her, and her future family should expect her guardian characteristics to develop further as she matures. With experienced, patient handling and continued positive exposure to the world, Anja has the opportunity to grow into a devoted and well managed adult dog while still retaining the independent character that comes naturally to her.
