On October 13, 2015, a roughly two-year-old dog named Django was found in the village of Buzica. After several months at the shelter, luck finally smiled on him, and on July 1, 2016, he went to his new home. We thought his story had ended exactly as we hope for every shelter dog—a happy ending. But we were wrong. On June 1, 2026, our phone rang. They wanted Django back. The reason? He was beginning to show signs of dementia, and they couldn't cope with him anymore. That same day, he was back at the shelter. Did the family feel bad about it? Yes, they did. Did it change anything? No. Almost ten years of life. Almost ten years spent with one family. Almost ten years filled with memories, habits, scents, places, and people he’d known. And suddenly, it all went away. We don’t know what Django was thinking when he stepped out of the car and walked back into the shelter. We don’t know if he remembered us. We don’t know if he’d been expecting someone to come back for him. All we know is that for an old dog, losing his home is one of the hardeest things he can experience. Yes, old age brings challenges. Just like in humans, dogs can develop health complications, impaired orientation, behavioral changes, or even dementia. Yet, it’s precisely then that they need their families most—patience, understanding, and a sense of security. We’re not here to judge anyone. Every story has two sides, and every family deals with its own issues. But we’ll admit that these returns always break our hearts. So we ask you—if you’re considering getting a dog, please think about his old age too. About the time when he’ll no longer be young, healthy, and carefree.
