Alekos est un très bon chien. C'est simple comme cela. Certains chiens n'ont rien qui attire immédiatement votre attention. Ils n'ont pas de couleurs frappantes, ils ne sont pas très grands ou très petits, ils ne font rien de particulièrement unique. Et c'est là que nous nous trompons, car chaque chien est unique. Chaque chien a une personnalité que vous découvrez petit à petit, à mesure que vous commencez à vous lier, à vous connaître mutuellement. Et d'une certaine manière, le chien que vous aimez devient unique. Alekos, vous voyez, est un berger calme, d'un certain âge, qui a été trouvé attaché au chenil municipal de Krestena. Nous l'avons amené au refuge, et dès le premier moment, il était clair que notre relation avec lui serait sans surprises, celle où vous savez que l'autre sera simplement à côté de vous, sans éclats ni intensité. Il fera sa promenade, reniflera l'herbe, voudra rencontrer d'autres chiens s'il en croise, aboiera dans sa voix profonde, basse et rauque aux chèvres du champ, mais il ne perdra pas la tête s'il ne se passe rien non plus. Car Alekos est content de peu : une caresse douce, s'allonger sur l'herbe. La seule chose pour laquelle il pourrait vraiment courir, c'est la nourriture. Quand nous ouvrons les portes pour lui et ses chiens voisins afin qu'ils sortent dans la cour, avant de rejoindre les autres, il passe d'abord devant leurs cages, cherchant même le moindre grain de nourriture oublié qui pourrait encore être dans leurs gamelles. Et ainsi vit Alekos — sans surprises, sans intensité — et nous nous demandons quand viendra enfin la grande surprise, et Alekos trouvera un foyer où il sera aimé pour ce qu'il est exactement : un très bon chien.

Alekos is a very good dog. As simple as that. Some dogs don’t have anything that immediately grabs your attention. They don’t have striking colors, they’re not very big or very small, they don’t do anything particularly unique. And that’s where we go wrong—because every dog is unique. Every dog has a personality that you discover little by little, as you begin to bond, as you get to know each other. And somehow, the dog you love becomes one of a kind. Alekos, you see, is a calm shepherd—of a certain age—who was found tied up at the Krestena municipal kennel. We brought him to the shelter, and from the very first moment it was clear that our relationship with him would be one without surprises—the kind where you know the other will simply be there beside you, without outbursts or intensity. He’ll go for his walk, sniff the grass, want to meet other dogs if he comes across them, bark in his deep, low, raspy voice at the goats in the field—but he won’t lose his mind if none of that happens either. Because Alekos is content with very little: a gentle pat, a lie down on the grass. The only thing he might actually run for is food. When we open the doors for him and his neighboring dogs to go out into the yard, before he joins the others, he first passes by their kennels, searching for even the tiniest leftover kibble that might still be in their bowls. And so Alekos’ life goes on—without surprises, without intensity—and we find ourselves wondering when the big surprise will finally come, and Alekos will find himself in a home where he’ll be loved for exactly who he is: a very good dog.
