You might be wondering: How could such suffering have befallen an animal? After all, it’s not at fault for anything. It hasn’t harmed anyone. But that’s just the way the world is—sometimes, very little is needed to cause suffering. And for our new warrior, Ninja, all it took was being thrown out onto the street. Then, probably, a collision with a car. We took him in from the police, and right from the start, we knew it would be a tough battle. Ninja had trouble breathing and couldn’t put any weight on his hind leg at all. We immediately realized this would be challenging. We took him to the vet, where it turned out his femur in the hind leg was fractured twice—and he must have been in terrible agony. At the same time, his lungs were also in bad shape, either due to an infection or possibly cancer; it wasn’t entirely clear. The plan was clear: the leg needed surgery as soon as possible to spare Ninja from further pain. But first, he had to stabilize enough to breathe properly so he could survive the anesthesia. There was also the option of letting him go, but Ninja didn’t want that—he wanted to live. He ate as if his life depended on it, and he cuddled just as enthusiastically, as if nothing was wrong. He’d just get exhausted after a while and need to catch his breath. So we started treatment, and then the day of the surgery arrived. It wasn’t certain whether Ninja would make it through—or even survive the anesthesia. But even if he didn’t, he’d go peacefully and without pain, so we simply had to take the risk. We gave him his favorite pouches, petted him, and already began saying goodbye in our hearts. But Ninja surprised us—he handled the surgery like a true warrior! Still, it wasn’t over yet. On Saturday, just a few days after the operation, he started collapsing again because of his lungs. We immediately rushed him to the clinic for oxygen therapy, where he remains today. The diagnosis is pneumonia—which is at least better than cancer. Ninja pulled through the first collapse, but as the heatwave hit, another one followed. Ninja is still fighting, and we’re fighting alongside him.

Možná si můžete říct, jak vůbec může dojít k takovému utrpení zvířete? Vždyť přece za nic nemůže. Nikomu nic neudělalo. Ale takový je svět a k utrpení stačí málo. A našemu novému bojovníkovi Ninjovi stačilo, že ho někdo vyhodil venku. A pak srážka s autem, pravděpodobně. Přijali jsme ho od policie a od začátku jsme viděli, že to bude boj. Ninja špatně dýchal a nemohl vůbec stoupnout na zadní pacičku. Hned jsme věděli, že to bude náročné. Vzali jsme ho na veterinu, kde se zjistilo, že má zadní stehenní kost dvakrát přelomenou a musí být v hrozné agonii. Zároveň má ale špatné plíce, buď kvůli infekci nebo kvůli rakovině, to nebylo jisté. Plán akce byl jasný, noha se co nejdříve musí operovat, abychom Ninjovi ušetřili bolest, ale napřed se musel stabilizovat kvůli dýchání, aby přežil narkózu. Byla také možnost ho nechat odejít, ale Ninja to nechtěl, chtěl žít. Jedl jako o život a stejně tak se i mazlil, jako kdyby mu nic nebylo. Akorát se po chvilce akce vyčerpal a musel to dodýchávat. Tak jsme začali s léčbou a přišel den operace. Nebylo jasné, jestli to Ninja přežije, jestli narkźu zvládne. Ale i kdyby ne, tak by odešel v klidu a bezbolestně, takže jsme to museli prostě risknout. Dali jsme mu jeho oblíbené kapsičky, pomazlili ho a už jsme se s ním v koutku mysli loučili. Ale Ninja nás překvapil a operaci zvládl jako bojovník! Nebylo ale vyhráno. V sobotu pár dní po operaci začal kolabovat kvůli plicím. Okamžitě jsme ho odvezli na kliniku na kyslík, kde dnes stále je. Diagnóza je pneumonie, což je aspoň lepší, než rakovina. Ninja se z prvního kolapsu dostal, ale jak přišla vedra, přišel další. Ninja stále bojuje a my bojujeme s ním.
