Sergeant est un cheval irlandais sportif noir de 18 hh né en 2008. Il a été acheté et apporté d'Irlande par le Ministère de la Défense en 2016 et emmené vivre à Sandhurst, car ils comptaient le former pour rejoindre la Garde royale. Après leurs premières tentatives, ils ont rapidement décidé qu'il n'était pas adapté au poste. Le processus habituel dans ces circonstances serait de vendre le cheval à un membre du public, mais ils étaient arrivés à un point où ils n'arrivaient même plus à mettre une bride à Sergeant, et il avait été classé comme dangereux et impossible à entraîner, donc ils ne souhaitaient pas le vendre par crainte qu'il blesse sérieusement quelqu'un, et il devait être euthanasié à l'âge de 8 ans. Heureusement, l'épouse d'un soldat de cavalerie a entendu parler de sa situation, a trouvé Shy Lowen et a convaincu le MoD de lui offrir une chance pour un autre avenir. Il est venu au refuge en été 2016 avec un dossier rempli de dénégations disant qu'il n'était pas sûr à manipuler ou à monter, et ils ne prenaient aucune responsabilité pour tout dommage qu'il pourrait causer. Beau Sergeant s'est très rapidement adapté et s'est révélé être un grand bébé qui avait simplement besoin de beaucoup d'amour et de rassurance. C'est un charmant petit garçon, mais pas très intelligent, donc il a besoin de beaucoup de temps pour assimiler quelque chose de nouveau ! Il est très facile à manier, à charger et avec le vétérinaire et le ferblancier. À la fin de l'été, il avait porté son premier cavalier très calmement, et depuis il progresse bien, mais lentement. Sergeant est disponible pour adoption en prêt à un foyer expérimenté et compréhensif où il pourra continuer son éducation.

Sergeant is an 18hh black Irish Sport Horse born in 2008. He was bought and brought over from Ireland by the Ministry of Defence in 2016 and taken to live at Sandhurst, as they planned to train him to join the Household Cavalry. After their first attempts to do so, they quickly decided that he was unsuitable for the job. The usual process in those circumstances would be to sell the horse on to a member of the public, but they had reached a point where they were unable to even put a head collar on Sergeant, and he had been classed as dangerous and untrainable, so they were unwilling to sell him for fear of him seriously hurting someone, and he was to be put to sleep at 8 years of age. Thankfully, the wife of a cavalry soldier heard of his plight, found Shy Lowen and persuaded the MoD to give him a chance at a different future. He came to the sanctuary in summer 2016 with a file full of disclaimers to say he was not safe to handle or ride, and they would accept no liability for any injuries he may cause. Handsome Sergeant settled in very quickly and proved to be a giant baby who simply needed a lot of love and reassurance. He is a lovely, gentle boy, but not the brightest, so needs plenty of time to process anything new! He is very good to handle, load and with the vet and farrier. By the end of the summer he had carried his first rider very calmly, and has been progressing well, but slowly ever since. Sergeant is available for rehoming on loan to an experienced and understanding home where he can continue his education.
