Egy természetes visszahúzódó, Watson egy érzékeny lélek, aki nagyon élvezi a finom kapcsolatokat az emberekkel, miután időt kapott arra, hogy minden megtörténjen. Ezért gyakran kordában tartja az érzelmeit, így nem olyan izgatottan üdvözlő, mint néhány más szürkevérű, aki felszabadultan keresi a fogadókát. Watson majdnem egy hónapot töltött egy csendes gondozói házban az elmúlt időszakban, részben a lakásértékelés/kennel pihenő programunk keretében, hogy jobban megismerjük, hogyan érezheti magát otthon. Nagyon jól sikerült, és a gondozója izgatottan megjegyezte: "Ennek a fiúnak rengeteg jó híre van! Szerettem, hogy nálam volt." Watson viszonylag könnyedén alkalmazkodott a házi környezethez. Néhány napon belül már nem zavarta a háztartási gépek vagy a TV, és megtanulta a WC használatát. A helyszínen való tartás végére kezdett enyhülni annyira, hogy megmutassa a karakterét, amely rendkívül szeretetteljes és kíváncsi. Mivel eddig mindig más szürkevérűkkel élt egy rutinszerű futókennel környezetben, Watson még tanul a bizalom megszerzésére, hogy időt tölthessen egyedül. Ezért keresünk egy otthont, ahol folyamatos társaságot tud nyújtani Watsonnak, és lassan növelni a bizalom és a függetlenség érzését. Ugyanakkor ő nagyon szívesen tölti az időt más emberi „Nagyi”-kkel és „Nagyapa”-kkal, ha el akarsz menni! Ő is jól utazik, és rövid időt elvisel a kocsiban, ha el akarsz menni a boltba. Éppúgy, mint a többi ex-futó, Watson jól érzi magát, ha a napi élet megjósolható. Kezdetben nagyon rövid és csendes séta szükséges, mert a különleges látványok, zajok és ismeretlen kutyák, amelyek nem szürkevérűk, túl sokat nyomhatnak rá. Ezzel dolgoztunk vele, és jól halad, új képességeket tanult, és továbbra is támogatni fogjuk ezt. Ez azt jelentheti, hogy kezdetben a séta nem lesz túl izgalmas, de amint nő a bizalma, látjuk, hogy több helyre is el tud menni. Szívesen szaglászik, ezért egy csendes erdei ösvény ideális lesz számára végül, amikor már biztosabban érzi magát a szabadban.

A natural introvert, Watson is a sensitive soul who very much enjoys gentle interactions with people once he has had time to take everything in. Because of this, he tends to keep all his emotions inside and so doesn’t tend to greet people as exuberantly as some of the other greyhounds available for adoption. Watson spent close to a month in a quiet foster home recently as part of our home assessment/kennel respite programme to help us better understand how he might find home life. He did really well, causing his foster carer to excitedly comment, “There’s so much good news with this boy! I’ve loved having him.” Watson settled into the home environment with relative ease. Within a few days, he was no longer bothered by home appliances or the TV and had perfected the toileting routine. By the end of the first week, he had cracked the stairs and was sleeping right through the night in an open crate in his foster carer’s room. And by the end of the placement, he was beginning to relax enough to show his personality as extremely loving and inquisitive. Because he has only ever lived with other greyhounds in the routine environment of a racing kennel, Watson is still learning to feel confident enough to spend time alone. For that reason, we are looking for a home that can provide constant company for Watson and work on increasing his confidence and independence very gradually. However, he’s very happy to spend time with other human ‘Aunties’ and ‘Uncles’, if you need to go out! He also travels well and can spend short amounts of time in the car if you need to pop to the shops. Live many ex-racers, Watson thrives when life is predictable. He needs very short and quiet walks initially, as he can get overwhelmed with strange sights, noises and unfamiliar dogs who aren’t greyhounds. We’ve been working on this with him, and he’s been making good progress and learning new skills, and we will continue to support with this. This might mean walks aren’t that interesting to begin with but as his confidence develops, we can see him being able to go to more places. He absolutely loves to sniff, so a quiet woodland trail will be perfect for him eventually, once he feels more at ease being outside.
