La storia di Dory è così toccante che ci spinge a lottare con più forza per il cambiamento e la compassione nel benessere animale. Sappiamo alcune parti della sua storia, o almeno quelle che ci sono state raccontate. 5 anni fa è stata calciata in faccia da un altro cavallo, rompendole la mascella e danneggiandole l'occhio. È stata lasciata a se stessa senza trattamenti. Qualcosa è accaduto negli ultimi mesi che ha peggiorato la situazione, rendendo quasi impossibile per Dory mangiare. L'abbiamo salvata, aspettandoci di effettuare una eutanasia immediata per porre fine al suo dolore. Dopo averla incontrata e visto la sua forte volontà di vivere e combattere abbiamo deciso di darle una possibilità. Ci siamo impegnati a provare per lei finché era piena di spirito e lotta e andava nella giusta direzione. Ma appena ha mostrato segni di sofferenza e di sconfitta, avremmo messo fine al suo dolore. Povera Dory aveva tutto sbagliato, una mascella rotta che era il suo problema principale. Costava a lei più energia mangiare, di quanto ottenesse dal cibo. Aveva un occhio cieco infetto, un soffio al cuore e era pelle e ossa. L'unico elemento che la teneva insieme era la sua forte mente e la sua splendida personalità. Ancora una volta, le persone che hanno fatto questo sono libere e i nostri meravigliosi volontari e sostentatori gentili sono rimasti a raccogliere i pezzi e pagare le bollette veterinarie. Dovevamo guardare intorno ai 1000 euro per tutto ciò che serviva per cura finale e rimozione del suo corpo. Qualcuno ci ha detto: "Se salviamo questa cavalla, tutte le altre sembreranno irrilevanti in confronto." Questo è senz'altro il peggiore stato in cui abbiamo mai visto un cavallo. Noi, i veterinari e altri esperti siamo tutti d'accordo. Seduti a guardarla prendere l'ultimo respiro con 15 persone intorno a lei spezza il cuore. Non solo per lei, ma per ogni altro animale che soffre in questo modo. Possiamo e continueremo a salvare cavalli e a cambiare le loro vite. Ma dobbiamo fare di più, dobbiamo lottare per ciò che è giusto. Abbiamo bisogno di un piano più ampio perché la gente ascolti, insieme siamo più forti. Dory non ha vinto la battaglia, tuttavia ha fatto qualcosa di grande, ha creato una comunità enorme. Persone che vogliono lottare per il cambiamento e la condivisione della conoscenza. Non è mai stata sola per un secondo durante la sua ultima settimana, i volontari si sono trasferiti nel box e l'hanno nutrita, tenuta pulita e comoda. Almeno ha sentito amore e conforto nelle sue ultime ore. Se desideri donare per il pagamento del suo bilancio finale saremmo grati. Lei, noi e il prossimo cavallo che dovrà essere salvato. Dory's story is so touching, it drives us to fight harder for change and compassion in animal welfare. We know some of her background story, or at least what we were told. 5 years ago she was kicked in the face by another horse, breaking her jaw and damaging her eye. She was left to fend for herself without treatment. Something happened in the last months which made the situation worse, making it almost impossible for Dory to eat. We rescued her, expecting to do an instant euthanasia to end her suffering. After meeting her and seeing her strong will to live and fight we decided to give her a chance. We vowed as long as she was full of spirit and fighting and in the right direction we would try for her. But as soon as she showed any signs of suffering and defeat we would end her suffering. Poor Dory had everything wrong, a broken jaw which was her biggest problem. It cost her more energy to eat, than she would get from the food. She had a blind infected eye, a heart murmur and she was skin and bones. The only thing holding her together was her strong mind and amazing personality. Once again, the people who did this are free and our amazing volunteers and kind supporters are left to pick up the pieces and pay the vet bills. We had to look at around 1000 euros for everything needed for end of life care and removal of her body. Someone said to us: ‘If we rescue this mare all of the others will seem irrelevant in comparison.' This is without a doubt the worst condition we have ever seen a horse in. Us, the vets and other experts are all in agreement. Sitting and watching her take her last breath with 15 people around her breaks your heart. Not just for her, but for every other animal that suffers in this way. We can and will continue to rescue horses and change their lives. But we need to do more, we need to fight for what is right. We need to get a bigger platform so people will listen, together we are stronger. Dory may not have won the battle, however she did something amazing, she created a huge community. People that want to fight for change and knowledge to be shared. She was not alone for a second over her last week, volunteers moved in to the stable and kept her fed, clean and comfortable.
