Em junho de 2025, fomos alertados para uma colónia de mais de 40 gatos vivendo num local de caravanas — gatos que não apenas eram negligenciados, mas também brutalmente maltratados por alguns dos residentes. Filhotes foram reportados a serem espancados com martelos. Gatos adultos eram chutados e amedrontados. É quase insuportável escrever, muito menos imaginar. Não conseguimos salvá-los todos — mas sabíamos que tínhamos de tentar. Com a ajuda dos Amigos da Flori, 15 destas almas esquecidas foram resgatados. Oito foram levados directamente aos veterinários, tratados, esterilizados, vacinados e transferidos para outras organizações de resgate. E depois estavam os que sofreram mais. Em estilo verdadeiramente Flori, mantivemos os casos mais graves — os gatos que estavam demasiado traumatizados, demasiado quebrados e demasiado assustados para ser simplesmente transferidos. Estes não são gatos de rápida adopção. São gatos que podem demorar anos a aprender que os humanos já não significam dor. Alguns nunca confiarão plenamente. E isso está bem. Não os pressionamos. Permitimos que fiquem juntos com os companheiros que amam. Têm espaço, segurança, alimentação constante, cuidados suaves e o tempo que nunca lhes foi dado antes. A nossa esperança é que, um dia, possam escolher confiar — mas se não for esse o caso, viverão as suas vidas protegidas e respeitadas. Todos estes gatos são positivos para o vírus FIV e necessitam de suplementação diária, juntamente com dietas especializadas, pois vários sofrem de doença intestinal inflamatória. In June 2025, we were alerted to a feral colony of more than 40 cats living on a caravan site—cats who were not just neglected, but brutally abused by some of the residents. Kittens were reportedly beaten with hammers. Adult cats were kicked and terrorised. It is almost unbearable to write, let alone imagine. We couldn’t save them all—but we knew we had to try. With the help of Flori’s Friends, 15 of these forgotten souls were rescued. Eight were taken straight to the vets, treated, neutered, vaccinated, and transferred on to other rescues. And then there were the ones who had suffered the most. In true Flori’s style, we kept the very worst cases—the cats who were too traumatised, too broken, and too frightened to simply be moved along. These are not quick-turnaround cats. They are cats who may take years to learn that humans no longer mean pain. Some may never fully trust. And that’s okay. We do not rush them. We allow them to stay together with the companions they love. They have space, safety, consistent food, gentle care, and the time they were never given before. Our hope is that, one day, they may choose to trust—but if not, they will still live their lives protected and respected. All of these cats are FIV positive and require daily supplementation, along with specialist diets, as several suffer from inflammatory bowel disease. Their care is ongoing and lifelong. Sponsorship helps cover their daily food, vitamins, medical care, litter, and the small comforts—like treats—that remind them life can be kind. This is a truly special colony. One nobody wanted to help. One that will always be overlooked for being black, feral, and afraid. And here, they are finally safe.
