A casa não estava em outro lugar, estava aqui o tempo todo. Pepito chegou até nós de uma senhora idosa que amava muito os seus gatos e tentou cuidar de tantos quanto pôde. Como tantos amantes de animais na ilha, ela se sentiu sobrecarregada e, por fim, não teve mais espaço ou recursos para cuidar de Pepito e do seu irmão. Os dois filhotes chegaram com cerca de 8–9 semanas de idade – demasiado pequenos para se juntarem com segurança à nossa colónia de gatos soltos. Em vez disso, foram colocados em acolhimento com um dos nossos voluntários, onde Pepito formou imediatamente uma ligação especial com o cão deles, Luno. Os três tornaram-se inseparáveis e Pepito aprendeu rapidamente que o mundo podia ser seguro e carinhoso. O irmão de Pepito foi adotado, mas Pepito nunca encontrou um lar tradicional. Em vez disso, encontrou algo tão significativo: um lugar onde realmente pertencia. A Cave House tornou-se o seu mundo, a sua zona de conforto e a sua família. Mesmo após o voluntário que o acolheu ter partido, Pepito escolheu ficar e até hoje ainda pode ser encontrado lá, saudando os voluntários com alegria, pedindo abraços e aceitando quaisquer guloseimas que lhe sejam oferecidas. Carinhoso, gentil e encantador sem fim, Pepito tocou os corações de muitos voluntários ao longo dos anos. Ele pode não ter encontrado um lar fora do santuário, mas criou o seu próprio tipo de lar – um repleto de estabilidade, amizade e amor.

Home wasn’t elsewhere – it was here all along. Pepito came to us from a kind older woman who adored her cats and tried her very best to care for as many as she could. Like so many animal lovers on the island, she became overwhelmed and eventually no longer had the space or resources to care for Pepito and his sibling. The two kittens arrived at around 8–9 weeks old – far too small to safely join our free-roaming cat colony. Instead, they went into foster with one of our volunteers, where Pepito immediately formed a special bond with their dog, Luno. The three became inseparable and Pepito quickly learned that the world could be both safe and loving. Pepito’s sibling was adopted, but Pepito himself never found a traditional home. Instead, he found something just as meaningful: a place where he truly belonged. The Cave House became his world, his comfort zone, and his family. Even after the volunteer who fostered him moved on, Pepito chose to stay and to this day, he can still be found there, happily greeting volunteers, asking for cuddles, and accepting any treats he’s offered. Affectionate, gentle, and endlessly charming, Pepito has touched the hearts of countless volunteers over the years. He may not have found a home outside of the sanctuary, but he has created his own version of home – one filled with stability, friendship, and love.
