Adopting from Croatia

Croatia is home to 14 rescue shelters listed on TailHarbor, with 577 animals currently available for adoption. Whether you live in Croatia or are looking to adopt from abroad, the process is straightforward with the right preparation.

The adoption process

Shelters in Croatia typically require an application form, a meeting with the animal, and sometimes a home visit. Adoption contracts specify your responsibilities as an owner, including providing adequate shelter, nutrition, and veterinary care. Most shelters also follow up after adoption to ensure the animal is settling in well.

What's included with adoption

Animals adopted from shelters in Croatiaare generally vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered or spayed before rehoming. Adoption fees cover these veterinary costs and help the shelter continue its work. Fees vary by shelter and animal but are a fraction of what you'd pay at a breeder.

Adopting from Croatia to another country

If you're adopting a pet from Croatiaand bringing it to another European country, you'll need an EU pet passport, a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel), and a microchip. Some destination countries have additional requirements such as tapeworm treatment or breed-specific legislation. Check our import guides for country-specific requirements and timelines.
