Achille

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 5 months

Two smaller Maremmano-female dogs, which had run into a shepherd in a small village near Sassari, gave birth almost simultaneously: 4 boys and 5 girls. The shepherd didn't want the babies, and one of our helpers' acquaintances convinced the shepherd to not kill the babies but to seek help instead. He wanted to keep one of the mothers, but he wanted to get rid of the second mother and the babies. Under the condition that he would allow the remaining female dog to be neutered, they agreed to help him. (By the way, the female dog's castration has already taken place.) So, one of the mothers and all nine babies came to Stintino for rescue. The mother now had to take care of a large litter. At first, it went well, but over time, she was perhaps a bit overwhelmed. In any case, she treated some of the little ones rather roughly, and Achille and Arno were also injured. Arno got a scratch under his eye, which has already healed. Achille had it worse. He suffered a head-brain-trauma and in addition, a bite wound on his head led to an abscess. Paola immediately took the little guy into her house. Day and night, Paola was there for Achille - he would have received similar good and loving care in a small animal clinic. For several weeks, Achille did not do well, and we were all very worried about the little guy. Then, finally, Paola could report that it was going up in small steps, and now Achille is doing so well that he can play with some other puppies that are housed nearby. The abscess is almost healed, and the fur is already growing back at the affected spot. There are still some minor issues, like, for example, squinting, but Paola assumes that these will also regulate themselves over time. And if not: Achilles' joie de vivre does not suffer from that. We are sure he will find the people who will love him just as he is. Aida, Anna, Appia, Asia, Aurelia, as well as the boys Angelo, Arno, and Augusto, are housed in one of the boxes in the large dog house. And when the door to the large free-run area is open, there is no holding back. They play, they wrestle, and they burrow, to their heart's content. And when the helper's son is there, the joy is especially great, and he needs stability to withstand the onslaught. As well as it goes for the siblings in rescue: it is no substitute for a real home. We wish, therefore, for Achille, Aida, Angelo, Anna, Appia, Arno, Asia, Augusto, and Aurelia, that they soon embark on their journey to Germany to find their forever dream home. The puppy children need loving people who will support and foster their development and let them participate in all family activities. Do you want to enrich your family with one of these adorable puppy children? If you are currently on the lookout for a new furry family member and are aware that adoption brings not only great joy but also a lot of work and great responsibility, we look forward to your message. We provide assistance throughout Germany.

About Achille

What life with Achille looks like

Achille is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Achille, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Achille?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Achille on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Achille if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Achille already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Achille isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Achille and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
